1965 Cook Islands General Election
General elections were held in the Cook Islands on 20 April 1965 to elect 22 MPs to the Cook Islands Legislative Assembly. The elections were won by the Cook Islands Party and saw Albert Henry become the Cook Islands' first Premier. Background The holding of an election was necessary to elect members to approve the proposed constitution. If approved, the new constitution would institute self-government for the Cook Islands. Because the election had the potential to result in removing the Cook Islands from the United Nations list of non-self-governing territories, the election was observed by representatives of the UN. The Cook Islands Amendment Act contained a clause limiting candidacy for the elections to people who had lived in the Cook Islands for at least three years before the election. Geoffrey Henry
Sir Geoffrey Arama Henry (16 November 1940 – 9 May 2012) was a Cook Island politician who was twice the Prime Minister of the Cook Islands. He was leader of the Cook Islands Party (CIP) from 1979 to 2006. Early life Henry was a native of Aitutaki. His father was the deacon of the Cook Islands Christian Church on the island. He was also first cousin to Albert Henry. He received a law degree from Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. He was married to Lady Louisa Henry. Political career Henry initially entered parliament in the opposition party aged 24 because of the corruption and excesses of the governing Cook Islands Party led by his cousin Albert Henry. However, in 1972 he joined the CIP: "family pressure was unbearable, and he could not personally tolerate being ostracised by the family again". Raui Pokoati
Papa Raui Pokoati (1911 – 25 March 1981) was a Cook Islands politician. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly for his home island of Mitiaro between 1965 and 1978. Biography Pokoati was born on Mitiaro in 1911, In 1964 Pokoati was a founder member of the Cook Islands Party (CIP) and part of its central committee. Although he had lived on Rarotonga for several years, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly from Mitiaro in 1965, defeating his cousin Titi Tetava Ariki. In mid-1966 he was appointed Assistant to the Minister of Economic Development. He was re-elected unopposed in 1968 and 1972. Pokoati was re-elected again in 1974, but prior to the 1978 elections he left the CIP, establishing the Unity Party. He lost the election to David Tetava of the CIP. When Tetava's victory was annulled, Titi Tetava Ariki was elected. In 1977, Pokoati was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal. Julian Dashwood
Robert Julian Dashwood (1899 – 5 September 1970) was a British-born Cook Islands writer and politician. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly between 1963 and 1966 and served in the territory's first two cabinets. Mangaia (electorate)
Mangaia (traditionally known as A'ua'u Enua, which means ''terraced'') is the most southerly of the Cook Islands and the second largest, after Rarotonga. It is a roughly circular island, with an area of , from Rarotonga. Originally heavily populated, Mangaia's population has dropped by 75% in the last 50 years.
