1963 New Zealand Golf Circuit
The 1963 New Zealand Golf Circuit was the inaugural season of the New Zealand Golf Circuit, the main professional golf tour in New Zealand since it was established in 1963. Season outline The initial circuit was organised by the New Zealand Golf Association and was held over a five-week period from late August to late September. It consisted of 7 tournaments, 6 sponsored events followed by the New Zealand Open. Two events were held mid-week. There was additional prize money of £300 for the leading players in a points based system, based on performances over the whole series. 10 points were given to the winner, down to 1 for 10th place. Bruce Devlin
Bruce William Devlin (born 10 October 1937) is an Australian professional golfer, sportscaster and golf course designer. Early life Devlin was born in 1937 in Armidale, New South Wales, Australia. His parents, Jess and Artie, moved to Goulburn with Bruce, 6 months later, in 1938. Bruce went to school and technical college in Goulburn and played hockey, basketball and golf in and around Goulburn. Bruce married Gloria Gale in Goulburn on the 11 July 1959. In 1952, Devlin won the Southern Tablelands Open Junior Championship. A title he successfully defended in 1953, at the Tully Park Golf Course. In 1953 he and Perce Tyrie won the Open Foursomes Championship at the Goulburn Golf Club. Then Bruce won his first Goulburn Golf Club Open Championship in 1956. Peter Thomson (golfer)
Peter William Thomson (23 August 1929 – 20 June 2018) was an Australian professional golfer, often cited as the greatest and most successful golfer in Australian golf history. While also successful in academia, in the late 1940s Thomson turned professional and immediately had success on the Australasian circuits; beginning with victories in his home state of Victoria and then his first International victory the 1950 New Zealand Open followed by winning the 1951 Australian Open by 4 shots over one of his heroes Norman Von Nida. He then ventured over to Great Britain, trying his luck in the oldest championship of them all, the British Open where he finished T6th in his first Open championship in 1951. Frank Phillips (golfer)
Frank Stafford Phillips (24 July 1932 – 2 May 2023) was an Australian professional golfer. He was rated one of the best ball strikers of his era winning the 1957 and 1961 Australian Opens. He was a Life Member of the PGA of Australia from 2002. Phillips was born in Moss Vale, New South Wales on 24 July 1932. In Jack Pollard's book, ''Australian Golf: The Game and the Players'', Phillips is described as "a tall Sydney professional who built an outstanding record in Australian golf in the 1950s and 1960s". Phillips was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the 2017 Queen's Birthday Honours for service to golf. Phillips died at a nursing home in Bowral on 2 May 2023, at the age of 90. Caltex Tournament
The Caltex Tournament was a golf tournament held at Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club in Paraparaumu, New Zealand, from 1955 to 1972. History Bob Charles and Peter Thomson each won the event five times, while Kel Nagle won it four times and Dave Thomas won it twice. There were no playoffs and three of the tournaments ended in a tie. Bob Charles (golfer)
Sir Robert James Charles (born 14 March 1936) is a New Zealand professional golfer who won the 1963 Open Championship, the first left-handed player to win a major championship. He won the 1954 New Zealand Open as an 18-year-old amateur and made the cut in the same event in 2007, at the age of 71. His achievements over that period, in which he won 80 tournaments, rank him as one of the most successful New Zealand golfers of all time. Along with Michael Campbell, he is one of only two New Zealanders to win a men's major golf championship. Charles turned professional in late 1960 and for the next two years had some success in tournaments around the world. From 1963 until the mid-1970s he played mostly on the PGA Tour. The Wattie's Tournament was a golf tournament held in New Zealand from 1963 to 1970. History The event was generally hosted by Hastings Golf Club in Bridge Pa, except the 1969 event which was held at Gisborne. The 1963 tournament was held in September but later it was played in late November or in December. Bob Charles won the event four times. The event was sponsored by Wattie's. Barry Coxon
Barry Coxon (born 1940) is an Australian professional golfer. Amateur career Coxon grew up in Lambton, New South Wales. In the middle of 1954 Coxon started playing golf under the tutelage of his father Jim. He soon became a junior member at Muree Golf Club. Coxon first received media attention at the age of 14. He shot a 91 gross score at Muree's long-markers championship. He was noted for his "easy, graceful style." ''The Newcastle Sun'' reported that "more can be expected from him in the future." Later in the month he shot a net 90 to win the Muree Early Birds' Cup. Professional career In the late 1950s Coxon turned professional. During this early stage of his career he was an apprentice of Norman Von Nida. In 1958, Coxon won an apprenticeship championship at St. Michael's Golf Club in Sydney, Australia. The Roslyn Tournament was a golf tournament held in New Zealand in 1963. The event was played on the Balmacewen course at Otago Golf Club in Dunedin, New Zealand. Wills Classic
The Wills Classic was a series of golf tournaments held in Australia and New Zealand from 1960 to 1964. The first event in 1960 was contested by four players over nine different courses between 17 September and 2 October; the winner was determined by the aggregate score. Total prize money was A£5,100. The players were Stan Leonard, Gary Player, Mike Souchak and Peter Thomson (golfer), Peter Thomson. In 1961, the event became a 72-hole tournament with prize money of A£3,000. From 1963, the Australian tournament was replaced by the Wills Masters and the Classic event was moved to New Zealand. The New Zealand tournaments were part of the New Zealand Golf Circuit and had prize money of NZ£2,000. The sponsor was W.D. & H.O. Wills, a cigarette manufacturer. Ted Ball
Edward A. Ball (4 November 1939 – 17 April 1995) was an Australian professional golfer. He won several dozen significant tournaments in his career. Early life Ball was born in Hornsby, New South Wales. He had a decorated amateur career, including a win at the Australian Amateur in 1960, along with several other victories. Professional career Ball turned professional in the early 1960s and found immediate success. He won his first title in 1962 at the Queensland Open. He added numerous wins after that internationally. He staged one of Australian golf's greatest comebacks to win the Wills Masters in 1973. In 1974, he became the first player to successfully defend the Wills title. He shot rounds of 70, 69, 72 and 70 at The Australian Golf Club in Sydney to win by two strokes; this is said to be the greatest achievement in his career.
