Barry Coxon
Barry Coxon (born 1940) is an Australian professional golfer. Amateur career Coxon grew up in Lambton, New South Wales. In the middle of 1954 Coxon started playing golf under the tutelage of his father Jim. He soon became a junior member at Muree Golf Club. Coxon first received media attention at the age of 14. He shot a 91 gross score at Muree's long-markers championship. He was noted for his "easy, graceful style." ''The Newcastle Sun'' reported that "more can be expected from him in the future." Later in the month he shot a net 90 to win the Muree Early Birds' Cup. Professional career In the late 1950s Coxon turned professional. During this early stage of his career he was an apprentice of Norman Von Nida. In 1958, Coxon won an apprenticeship championship at St. Michael's Golf Club in Sydney, Australia. Lambton is a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, from Newcastle's central business district. Early days The Awabakal and Worimi peoples are acknowledged by City of Newcastle as the descendants of the traditional custodians of the land situated within the Newcastle local government area. Originally a coal-mining township, Lambton was incorporated as a Municipality (including Jesmond, New South Wales), on 24 June 1871. The 1891 Census gave the population as 3,434. It was the first municipality in Newcastle district to be lit by electric light. In the early years the miners of the township used to entertain themselves gambling on dog races, known as the "Dog & Rat" because they would release a rat (wallaby) on flat open area then let their dogs chase it down. Wattie's Tournament
The Wattie's Tournament was a golf tournament held in New Zealand from 1963 to 1970. The event was generally hosted by Hastings Golf Club in Bridge Pā, except the 1969 event which was held at Gisborne. The 1963 tournament was held in September but later it was played in late November or in December. Bob Charles won the event four times. Australian PGA Championship
The Australian PGA Championship is a golf tournament on the PGA Tour of Australasia. It is the home tournament of the Australian PGA. Since 2000 it has been held in the South East Queensland region. The tournament was part of the OneAsia Tour from 2009 to 2014, and from 2015 to 2019 it was co-sanctioned with the European Tour. The championship started in 1929, when the Australian Golf Union decided to hold the Australian Professional Championship during their annual championship meeting. The leading 16 professionals in the Open championship qualified for the match play event, with four rounds of matches over 36 holes. 1965 Canada Cup
The 1965 Canada Cup took place 30 September – 3 October at the Real Sociedad Hípica Española Club de Campo in Madrid, Spain. It was the 13th Canada Cup event, which became the World Cup in 1967. The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event with 37 teams. These were the same teams that had competed in 1964 but with the addition of Czechoslovakia, Monaco and Morocco. Each team consisted of two players from a country. The combined score of each team determined the team results. The South African team of Harold Henning and Gary Player won by eight strokes over the Spanish team of Ángel Miguel and Ramón Sota. Edward A. Ball (4 November 1939 – 17 April 1995) was an Australian professional golfer. He won several dozen significant tournaments in his career. Golf career Ball was born in Hornsby, New South Wales. He had a decorated amateur career, including a win at the Australian Amateur in 1960, along with several other amateur victories. He turned professional in the early 1960s and found immediate success. He won his first title in 1962 at the Queensland Open. He added numerous wins after that internationally. He staged one of Australian golf's greatest comebacks to win the Wills Masters in 1973 and in 1974 became the first player to successfully defend the Wills title.
