The 1962 Brownlow Medal was the 35th year the award was presented to the player adjudged the fairest and best player during the Victorian Football League (VFL) home and away season. Alistair Lord
Alistair Lord (born 9 April 1940) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Geelong during the late 1950s to the mid-1960s. Lord played as a centreman and debuted in 1959. He won the Brownlow Medal in 1962 comfortably, as well as the Carji Greeves Medal, averaging 30 disposals a game for the year. In 1963, he was a member of Geelong's premiership side, playing alongside his identical twin brother Stewart. Lord retired at 26 years old and returned to the family farm at Cobden. Kevin Murray (Australian Footballer)
Kevin Joseph Murray MBE (born 18 June 1938), commonly nicknamed "Bulldog", is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club in the Victorian Football League in 333 games over 18 seasons. Family The son of Daniel Thomas Murray (1912-1992), and Eileen May Murray (1913-1998), née Dowdle, Kevin Joseph Murray was born on 18 June 1938. Murray's father, Dan, had also played for Fitzroy, including their 1944 VFL Grand Final victory. Football He learned his junior football from Father John Brosnan (1919-2003) at St. Joseph's College, in Collingwood. Hassa Mann
Harold Peter "Hassa" Mann (born 09 October 1940) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for and captained Melbourne in the VFL during the 1960s. He earned the name Hassa when he was a toddler, from his cousin and future Melbourne footballer Len Mann. A centreman, Mann was recruited from Rutherglen, Victoria and made his debut for Melbourne in their premiership season of 1959. He was a premiership player again the following season and went on to become the club captain in 1965, a position he kept for four seasons. Mann finished in the top 10 of the Brownlow Medal count four times, including placing equal 7th in 1966 and equal 5th in 1967. He won Melbourne's Best and Fairest back to back in 1962 and 1963, and for a third time in 1967. He also twice topped their goalkicking, doing so as captain in 1967 and 1968. Verdun Howell
Verdun John Howell (born 16 June 1937) is a former Australian rules footballer who played senior football in Tasmania and in the VFL (now AFL). Howell played with City-South from 1953 to 1957. He was a member of that club's 1954 and 1956 NTFA premiership teams and in 1957 won City's best and fairest award. Howell made his VFL debut with the St Kilda Football Club in 1958 after being signed from Tasmania in 1953. He initially played on the half forward line, then later as a half back before playing with the Saints as a full back, where he won the 1959 Brownlow Medal, tying with Bob Skilton. Bob Skilton
Robert John "Bob" Skilton (born 8 November 1938) is a former Australian rules footballer who represented in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Playing as a rover, Skilton is one of only four players to have won the Brownlow Medal three times—in 1959 (when he tied with Verdun Howell), 1963, and 1968. His Brownlow record is shared by Fitzroy's Haydn Bunton, Sr (1931, 1932, 1935), Essendon's Dick Reynolds (1934, 1937, 1938), and Ian Stewart (1965, 1966, 1971). He was rated by Jack Dyer as better than Haydn Bunton, Sr and equal to Dick Reynolds, making him one of the best players in the history of the game. Ron Harvey (Australian Rules Footballer)
Ronald Joseph Harvey (11 November 1935 – 25 October 1991) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Fitzroy in the VFL. Family The son of Joseph Henry Harvey (1897-1969), and Elizabeth Agnes Harvey (1903-1973), née Morris, Ronald Joseph Harvey, was born at Annandale, New South Wales, on 11 November 1935. Brian Gray
Brian Gray (born 21 February 1938) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Gray usually played as a wingman but could also rove and play at half forward. He was a member of Collingwood's 1958 premiership team and played in a losing Grand Final in 1960. John Schultz (footballer, Born 1938)
John Schultz (born 28 September 1938) is a former Australian rules footballer who represented in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He had been a champion high-jumper at Caulfield Grammar School, winning the senior high jump at the 1955 Associated Grammar Schools Combined Athletics Meeting (as had South Melbourne's Jim Taylor in 1948). He also played for the school's First XVIII, a team which also contained other future VFL players, Ron Evans of Essendon and Ron Cabble of Hawthorn. Ken Fraser
Ken Fraser (born 17 February 1940) is a former Australian rules footballer in the (then) Victorian Football League (VFL). Originally recruited from the Essendon Baptists St John's club (which has since merged with Ascot Vale Presbyterians to become the Tullamarine Football Club) in the Essendon District Football League, Fraser mainly played at centre half-forward. He won the Essendon Football Club's Best First-Year Player award in 1958 and went on to play in two premiership teams, with the second premiership as captain. He also won two club best-and-fairest awards and represented Victoria on many occasions. In 2001, Fraser was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame. 1962 VFL Season
The 1962 VFL season was the 66th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 21 April until 29 September, and comprised an 18-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Essendon Football Club for the eleventh time, after it defeated by 32 points in the 1962 VFL Grand Final. Premiership season In 1962, the VFL competition consisted of twelve teams of 18 on-the-field players each, plus two substitute players, known as the 19th man and the 20th man. A player could be substituted for any reason; however, once substituted, a player could not return to the field of play under any circumstances.
