1961 VFA Season
The 1961 VFA season was the 80th season of the Victorian Football Association (VFA), an Australian rules football competition played in the state of Victoria. The season saw a significant change in the structure of the Association, with the competition split into two divisions with promotion and relegation between them, a system which remained in place until 1988. The Division 1 premiership was won by the Yarraville Football Club, after it defeated Williamstown in the Grand Final on 30 September by 63 points; it was Yarraville's second and final VFA premiership, and its first since 1935. The inaugural Division 2 premiership was won by Northcote; it was the club's first premiership in either division since 1936. Yarraville Football Club
The Yarraville Football Club, nicknamed the Eagles, was an Australian rules football club based in the Melbourne suburb of Yarraville. It founded in 1903 and competed in Victorian Football Association (VFA) from 1928 until going into recess in 1984. The club's home ground, Yarraville Oval, is now used by the Yarraville Seddon Eagles, but the modern-day club is not considered part of the Yarraville Football Club lineage. Sunshine Football Club (VFA)
The Sunshine Football Club, nicknamed the Crows, was an Australian rules football club which played in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) from 1959 until 1989. History Early years Formed in 1938 as the Sunshine Districts Football Club, the club had to differentiate from the Sunshine Football Club that was competing in the VFL Sub-Districts. The original Sunshine went into recess after the 1940 season. The district club managed to remain viable during the war (WWII) competing in the Footscray District League. In 1946 the club won the B grade Grand Final and was Runners-up in the A Grade grand final in 1949. Sunshine was a large football club in a strong growth area of Melbourne's west. Port Melbourne Football Club
The Port Melbourne Football Club, nicknamed the Borough, is an Australian rules football club based in the inner-Melbourne suburb of Port Melbourne. The club was founded in 1874 and has been competing in the Victorian Football League (VFL) – formerly known as the Victorian Football Association (VFA) – since 1886, and the VFL Women's (VFLW) since 2021. St Kilda Cricket Ground
Junction Oval (also known as the St Kilda Cricket Ground, or the CitiPower Centre due to sponsorship reasons) is a historic sports ground in the suburb of St Kilda in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The oval's location near the St Kilda Junction gave rise to its name. It is located approximately five kilometres south from the centre of Melbourne and is in the southernmost part of the large Albert Park sporting precinct. The oval is the administrative headquarters of Cricket Victoria, and was redeveloped between 2015 and 2018 for that purpose. The McIntyre system, or systems as there have been five of them, is a playoff system that gives an advantage to teams or competitors qualifying higher, by allowing higher qualified teams to lose more games or series before being eliminated compared to lower qualified teams. Central Reserve
Central Reserve is a cricket and Australian rules football ground in the suburb of Glen Waverley, in the south-east of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is located at the intersection between Waverley Rd and Springvale Rd. It is the current home of the Richmond Cricket Club in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition and it is also the current home of Mazenod Old Collegians Football Club, who currently play in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). Since the 1970s, the ground has been used by three separate Victorian District/Premier Cricket clubs. East Malvern Football Club
The East Malvern Football Club is an Australian rules football club located in the southern suburbs of Melbourne. The club participates in the Southern Football League, based in the south and south eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria. History The club was established in 1964 as a result of a merger of the Tooronga FC and the Malvern Amateurs FC. The Tooronga Football Club (est. 1919) & the Malvern Amateur Football club (est. 1934), held talks to form a club that took in the Tooronga and Malvern areas. Waverley Football Club
The Waverley Football Club, nicknamed the Panthers, was an Australian rules football club based in the Melbourne suburb of Glen Waverley. The club competed in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) from 1961 until 1987. They became the Waverley Amateurs in 1988 after absorbing Clayton Amateurs, before merging with Mount Waverley Burwood to form the Waverley Blues in 1998. Oakleigh Football Club
The Oakleigh Football Club, nicknamed the Devils, was an Australian rules football club based in the Melbourne suburb of Oakleigh that competed in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) from 1929 until 1994. Oakleigh wore purple guernseys with a gold monogram, thus giving them their original nickname, the Purple and Golds. Federal Football League
The Federal Football League (FFL), also known simply as the Federal League, was an Australian rules football competition in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria. The competition was in existence from 1909 to 1981 and was regarded as one of the strongest metropolitan leagues in Melbourne.
