1955 Pondicherry Representative Assembly Election
After the de facto merger on 1 November 1954 and before the legal integration with the Indian Union on 16 August 1962, general elections were held in 1955 and 1959. So. the first general elections to the Pondicherry Representative Assembly (French: ''Assemblée représentative de Pondichéry'') along with 16 municipal councils were held in 1955 from 18 to 23 July for 39 constituencies to constitute First Pondicherry Representative Assembly (French: ''Première Assemblée représentative de Pondichéry''). Maurice Paquirissamypoullé
Maurice Paquirissamypoullé, or Paquirissamy-Poullé, (9 August 1906 – 13 January 1956) was a rice trader and politician from the colony of Karaikal in French India. He represented the colony in the Council of the Republic from 1947 until 1955, when his seat was dissolved following the union with India. He did what he could to ensure a peaceful transition of power. Early years Maurice Paquirissamypoullé was born on 9 August 1906 in Karaikal, French India. He studied at the Collège Colonial in Pondicherry. He became a rice trader. Paquirissamypoullé did not speak French well, and flirted with communism before entering mainstream politics as a socialist. He was married to Nagammal. Kewal Singh
Kewal Singh Choudhary (1915–1991) was an Indian diplomat, Foreign Secretary and India's ambassador to the USSR, Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan and USA. He was a 1955 recipient of the Indian civilian honour of Padma Shri. Early life and education Kewal Singh was born into a Sikh family in the Lyallpur District of West Punjab on June 1, 1915. He was educated at the Forman Christian College, Lahore, the Law College, Lahore and at the Balliol College of Oxford University. He joined the Indian Civil Service in 1939 and served in Punjab in administrative positions until Independence after which he opted for the Indian Foreign Service. Between 1944 and 1946 he served as Colonization Officer, Nilibar. Then he served as district magistrate at Shahpur and Simla for the years 1946-47 and 1947-48 respectively. Édouard Goubert
Édouard Goubert (29 July 1894 – 14 August 1979) was mayor and first List of Chief Ministers of Puducherry, chief minister of Pondicherry (union territory), Pondicherry between 1 July 1963 and 11 September 1964. Initially a strongly pro-French leader, he later shifted towards the pro-merger Indian National Congress, which ultimately became the death knell for the sovereignty of France's ''comptoirs'' (trading posts) in India. He and Lambert Saravane founded the French India Socialist Party in July 1947. Goubert was popularly known as ''Pappa Goubert''.
