The game featured the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles and the East Texas State Lions (now East Texas A&M University). Preston Vaughn Overall
Preston Vaughn "Putty" Overall (June 5, 1897 – January 1, 1974) was an American football player and coach of football, basketball, and baseball. He served as the head coach of football, baseball, and basketball at Tennessee Polytechnic Institute, now known as Tennessee Tech. He came out of retirement in 1952 and coached Tech's football team, posting a 9–1 regular season record plus an invitation to the 1953 Tangerine Bowl. Overall played football at Middle Tennessee State, where he was captain of the 1917 team, as well as one year with Dan McGugin's Vanderbilt Commodores, in 1921. The 1960 Tangerine Bowl (December) was an American college football bowl game played on December 30, 1960 at the Tangerine Bowl stadium in Orlando, Florida. The Citadel Bulldogs of the Southern Conference defeated the of the Ohio Valley Conference by a score of 27–0. It was the second of two Tangerine Bowls played in calendar year 1960. Heading into the game, The Citadel finished their regular season slate with a 7–2–1 record, finishing second in the Southern Conference behind VMI. This has been the only bowl appearance for The Citadel. Tennessee Tech entered with an 8–2 record. They were Ohio Valley Conference champions after having finished 6–0 in conference play. The Arkansas State Indians (now the Arkansas State Red Wolves) tied the East Texas State Lions (now the East Texas A&M–Lions) by a score of 7–7. Game summary The first quarter saw the first score of the game, as Bobby Spann found James Turley on a 20-yard pass for an Arkansas State touchdown. That proved to be the only scoring of the quarter, which finished 7–0. The second quarter and third quarter were scoreless.
