1935 German Grand Prix
The 1935 German Grand Prix was a Grand Prix motor race held at the Nürburgring on 28 July 1935. The underdog victory of Tazio Nuvolari in an Alfa Romeo P3 against far more powerful German cars that had dominated the season to this point is widely considered one of the greatest events in the history of motor racing. Thomas Raymond Mays (1 August 1899 – 6 January 1980) was an auto racing driver and entrepreneur from Bourne, Lincolnshire, England. He attended Oundle School, where he met Amherst Villiers, leaving at the end of 1917. After army service in the Grenadier Guards in France, he attended Christ's College, Cambridge, taking his first win at Brooklands while an undergraduate. Hermann Albert Lang (6 April 1909 – 19 October 1987) was a German racing driver who raced motorcycles, Grand Prix cars, and sports cars. Prewar racing Born in Cannstatt near Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, Hermann Lang had to go to work at age fourteen to help support his family following the death of his father. Young Lang found a job as a motorcycle mechanic, eventually buying his own used bike with which he began amateur racing. He won the first race he entered and before long decided to compete in the sidecar class. At age twenty-two, he won the German sidecar mountain race championship. Pietro Ghersi (24 January 1899 – 1 August 1972) was an Italian motorcycle racer and, from 1927, also a racecar driver. He was born in Genoa. With his brother Mario Ghersi and Luigi Arcangeli he biked in the 1926 Isle of Man TT and 1930 Isle of Man TT in Moto Guzzi. Racing cars, he won the Spa 24 Hours 1930 with Attilio Marinoni in an Alfa Romeo 6C. In 1932 Ghersi was in the Mille Miglia and XXII Targa Florio in an Alfa Romeo 8C 2300. Achille Varzi (8 August 1904 – 1 July 1948) was an Italian racing driver. He is remembered as the winner of the 1933 Monaco Grand Prix, as well as the winner of the first Formula One Grand Prix at the 1946 Turin Grand Prix, and as the chief rival of Tazio Nuvolari.
