16th Helpmann Awards
The 16th Annual Helpmann Awards for live performance in Australia were held on 25 July 2016 at the Sydney Lyric Theatre. The Australian production of ''Matilda the Musical'' received thirteen awards including every award for musicals. Griffin Theatre Company's drama ''The Bleeding Tree'' received three awards including Best Play. Brisbane Baroque's production of Handel's ''Agrippina'' received four awards including Best Opera, and Bangarra Dance Theatre's ''Sheoak'' received three awards including Best Ballet or Dance Work. Sydney Lyric
Sydney Lyric is a theatre in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is part of The Star complex. The theatre is used for large scale musicals, theatre productions, concerts, opera and ballet. Formerly the Lyric Theatre, the venue changed to its current name in late 2011. The theatre has been owned and operated by Foundation Theatres Pty Limited (formerly Foundation Entertainment Group) since October 2011, which also owns Sydney's Capitol Theatre. In February 2017, the Sydney Lyric underwent a $18 million auditorium upgrade, including movable walls that alter the theatre's seating capacity from 1,350 up to 2,010 seats. The Melbourne Theatre Company is a theatre company based in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Founded in 1953 as the Union Theatre Repertory Company at the Union Theatre at the University of Melbourne, it is the oldest professional theatre company in Australia. Sydney Theatre Company (STC) is an Australian theatre company based in Sydney, New South Wales. The company performs in the Wharf Theatre at Dawes Point in The Rocks area of Sydney as well as the Roslyn Packer Theatre (formerly Sydney Theatre) and the Sydney Opera House Drama Theatre. Love And Information
''Love and Information'' is a play written by the British playwright Caryl Churchill. It first opened at the Royal Court Theatre in September 2012. It received many positive reviews from critics. Synopsis The play is a compilation of seven sections each with a number of scenes that range from less than a minute in length to a few minutes long. The seven sections of the play must be done in order; however, the scenes/vignettes within each section can be done in whatever order the director wishes. The "random" section of scenes, included at the end of the play, are able to be incorporated anywhere within the play. The loose structure of the play and the wide range of casting options—nothing is specific in terms of casting—allows the director ample freedom to develop the storyline of the play along with the particular themes and questions they want to highlight with their production. Kip Williams
Kip Williams is an Australian director and writer of theatre and opera. Williams was Artistic Director of Sydney Theatre Company from 2016-2024. His appointment at age 30 made him the youngest artistic director in the company's history. Biography Williams first joined Sydney Theatre Company (STC) in 2012, when he was appointed Directing Associate by then Artistic Directors Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton. Simon Phillips (born 1958) is a New Zealand-Australian director of theatre, musicals and opera. He is a former Artistic Director of Melbourne Theatre Company. Phillips graduated from Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School in 1980 with a Diploma in Acting. Belvoir is an Australian theatre company based at the Belvoir St Theatre in Sydney, Australia, originally known as Company B. Its artistic director is Eamon Flack. The theatre comprises two performing spaces: the Upstairs Theatre and the smaller Downstairs Theatre. Ivanov (play)
''Ivanov'' ( (Ivanov: drama in four acts); also translated as "Ivanoff") is a four-act drama by the Russian playwright Anton Chekhov. ''Ivanov'' was first performed in 1887, when Fiodor Korsh, owner of the Korsh Theatre in Moscow, commissioned Chekhov to write a comedy. Chekhov, however, responded with a four-act drama, which he wrote in ten days. The first performance was not a success and the production disgusted Chekhov himself. In a letter to his brother, he wrote that he "did not recognise his first remarks as my own" and that the actors "do not know their parts and talk nonsense". Irritated by this failure, Chekhov made alterations to the play. Consequently, the final version is different from that first performance. Eamon Flack
Eamon Flack is an Australian theatre director. He is the Artistic Director of Belvoir, a theatre company in Sydney's Surry Hills. Flack, who grew up in Darwin, Northern Territory, was encouraged towards a career in theatre by actor Bille Brown when studying at the University of Queensland, where Brown was an adjunct professor. Flack studied acting at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. Flack become Literary Manager and later Associate Director at Belvoir, before being appointed Artistic Director from 2016. Lee Lewis (born 1970) is an Australian theatre director. Early life and education Lewis was born in 1977 in Chicago, Illinois. Her family emigrated to Australia when she was a child. Lewis trained as an actor at Columbia University in New York. Returning to Australia, she completed a Masters of Directing at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in 2005. Career In 2006 she directed a play by New Zealand writer Matthew J. Saville about the Boer War entitled ''Kikia te Poa'', which was performed at the Old Fitzroy Theatre in Sydney.
