Lee Lewis
Lee Lewis (born 1970) is an Australian theatre director. Early life and education Lewis was born in 1977 in Chicago, Illinois. Her family emigrated to Australia when she was a child. Lewis trained as an actor at Columbia University in New York. Returning to Australia, she completed a Masters of Directing at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in 2005. Career In 2006 she directed a play by New Zealand writer Matthew J. Saville about the Boer War entitled ''Kikia te Poa'', which was performed at the Old Fitzroy Theatre in Sydney. She was appointed artistic director of Sydney's Griffin Theatre Company in 2012. Lewis was appointed artistic director of the Queensland Theatre Company in 2019, succeeding Sam Strong who was her predecessor at Griffin as well. She resigned from Queensland Theatre in March 2024. Helpmann Award Winners
Sir Robert Murray Helpmann (né Helpman) (9 April 1909 – 28 September 1986) was an Australian ballet dancer, actor, director, and choreographer. After early work in Australia he moved to Britain in 1932, where he joined the Vic-Wells Ballet (now The Royal Ballet) under its creator, Ninette de Valois. He became one of the company's leading men, partnering Alicia Markova and later Margot Fonteyn. When Frederick Ashton, the company's chief choreographer, was called up for military service in the Second World War, Helpmann took over from him while continuing as a principal dancer. Helpmann, from the outset of his career was an actor as well as a dancer, and in the 1940s he turned increasingly to acting in plays, at the Old Vic and in the West End theatre, West End. Most of his roles were in Shakespeare plays but he also appeared in works by George Bernard Shaw, Shaw, Noël Coward, Coward, Sartre and others. The Order of Australia is an Australian honour that recognises Australian citizens and other persons for outstanding achievement and service. It was established on 14 February 1975 by Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, on the advice of then prime minister Gough Whitlam. Before the establishment of the order, Australians could receive British honours, which continued to be issued in parallel until 1992. Appointments to the order are made by the governor-general, "with the approval of The Sovereign", according to recommendations made by the Council for the Order of Australia.
