15 October Coalition
The 15 October Coalition () has been the ruling government of Poland since 13 December 2023. It is a big tent coalition that includes various political parties. The coalition was formed after the parliamentary election held on 15 October. The prime minister–designate Donald Tusk coined the term in his speech to the Sejm, announcing the new government's plans after a vote of no confidence for Mateusz Morawiecki. Prior to assuming power, the parties opposing the ruling Law and Justice-led United Right (with the exception of the far-right Confederation) were referred to as the Democratic Opposition () in the lead up to the 2023 elections. The firmly left wing Left Together party originally planned to enter the coalition, together with the New Left party as part of The Left coalition. Szymon Hołownia
Szymon Franciszek Hołownia (Polish: ; born 3 September 1976) is a Polish politician and television personality currently serving as Marshal of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland, Sejm since 13 November 2023. From 2008 to 2019 he co-hosted ''Mam talent!'', the Polish version of ''Got Talent'', together with Marcin Prokop. Candidate in the 2020 Polish presidential election, 2020 and 2025 Polish presidential election. He is the leader of the Poland 2050 political party. In the 2023 Polish parliamentary election, he was elected to the Sejm from Sejm Constituency no. 24, Białystok as a member of Third Way (Poland), Third Way. Voivodeship Sejmik
A voivodeship sejmik (), also known as a provincial or regional assembly, is the regional-level elected legislature for each of the sixteen voivodeships of Poland. Machnikowski et al., p. 21 Sejmiks are elected to five-year terms, decided during nationwide local elections. The size of the legislative assembly varies for each voivodeship depending on the population, ranging from 30 members in lesser populated provinces to 51 members in the most populous one. Elected representatives of an assembly are known as councillors (''radni''). Origins The word '' sejmik'' is a diminutive of ''sejm'', a historical term for an assembly of nobles, and is now the name of the lower house of the Polish National Assembly. Confederation Liberty And Independence
The Confederation Liberty and Independence (, KWiN), frequently shortened to just Confederation (), is a far-right political alliance in Poland. It was initially founded in 2018 as a political coalition for the 2019 European Parliament election in Poland, although it was later expanded into a political party in order to circumvent the 8% vote threshold for coalitions to enter the national parliament. It won 11 seats in the Sejm after the 2019 Polish parliamentary election. Its candidate for the 2020 Polish presidential election was Krzysztof Bosak, who placed fourth among eleven candidates. United Right (Poland)
The United Right ( , initially Fair Poland, ) refers to a parliamentary group formed by Jarosław Gowin and Zbigniew Ziobro with their respective parties, Poland Together and United Poland. After their cooperation at 2015 Polish parliamentary election with the Law and Justice party, 'United Right' became a media label for the then-ruling right-wing political alliance of Law and Justice with its aforementioned partners in Poland. Law and Justice ( , PiS) is a right-wing populist and national-conservative political party in Poland. The party is a member of European Conservatives and Reformists Group. Its chairman has been Jarosław Kaczyński since 18 January 2003. It was founded in 2001 by Jarosław and Lech Kaczyński as a direct successor of the Centre Agreement after it split from the Solidarity Electoral Action (AWS). It won the 2005 parliamentary and presidential elections, after which Lech became the president of Poland. The Polish Press Agency (, PAP) is Poland's national news agency, producing and distributing political, economic, social, and cultural news as well as events information. It was founded in 1918 as Polish Telegraphic Agency (PAT). PAP serves print media, online, radio and TV, as well as government offices and private businesses. Mateusz Jakub Morawiecki (; born 20 June 1968) is a Polish economist, historian and politician who served as the prime minister of Poland between 2017 and 2023. The Third Cabinet of Donald Tusk is the Coalition government, coalition Council of Ministers (Poland), government of Poland headed by Donald Tusk who was officially nominated and confirmed as the Prime Minister of Poland on 11 December 2023 by the members of the Sejm following the failure of Mateusz Morawiecki's Third Cabinet of Mateusz Morawiecki, Third Cabinet to secure a vote of confidence. A prime minister–designate or premier–designate is the person who is expected to succeed an incumbent as prime minister, or premier, as the result of a general election, winning the leadership of a currently governing party, or being named by the head of state to form a new government. 2023 Polish Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Poland on 15 October 2023 to elect members of the Sejm and Senate of Poland, Senate. A 2023 Polish referendum, referendum containing four questions concerning economic and immigration policy of the government was held simultaneously. A coalition government, or coalition cabinet, is a government by political parties that enter into a power-sharing arrangement of the executive. Coalition governments usually occur when no single party has achieved an absolute majority after an election. A party not having majority is common under proportional representation, but not in nations with majoritarian electoral systems.
