The 101st Massachusetts General Court, consisting of the Massachusetts Senate and the Massachusetts House of Representatives, met in 1880 during the Governor of Massachusetts, governorship of John Davis Long. Massachusetts General Court
The Massachusetts General Court, formally the General Court of Massachusetts, is the State legislature (United States), state legislature of the Commonwealth (U.S. state), Commonwealth of Massachusetts located in the state capital of Boston. The name "General Court" is a holdover from the earliest days of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, when the colonial assembly, in addition to making laws, sat as a judicial Appellate court, court of appeals. Before the adoption of the state constitution in 1780, it was called the Great and General Court, but the official title was shortened by John Adams, author of the Massachusetts Constitution, state constitution. It is a bicameral Legislature, body. The upper house is the Massachusetts Senate which is composed of 40 members. The Lower house, lower body, the Massachusetts House of Representatives, has 160 members; until 1978, the state house had 240 members. Elisha was, according to the Hebrew Bible, a Jewish prophet and a wonder-worker. His name is commonly transliterated into English as Elisha via Hebrew, Eliseus via Greek and Latin, Ełishe (Yeghishe/Elisha) via Armenian or Alyasa via Arabic, and Elyasa or Elyesa via Turkish. Marcus Perrin Knowlton
Marcus Perrin Knowlton (February 3, 1839 – May 7, 1918) was an American politician and jurist who served as chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. Biography Marcus Perrin Knowlton was born in Wilbraham, Massachusetts, to Merrick and Fatima Knowlton. He graduated from Yale University in 1860 and was admitted to the bar in 1862 in Hampden County, where he made his residence in Springfield. He was elected to the City Council, and also represented Springfield in the Massachusetts House of Representatives as well as the Massachusetts Senate. In 1881, he was appointed to the Massachusetts Superior Court. His career there was successful enough to earn him a spot on the Massachusetts Supreme Court in 1887. Harmon Hall
Harmon Hall (July 22, 1818 – June 30, 1891) was an American shoe manufacturer and politician who served in the Massachusetts General Court and on the Massachusetts Governor's Council. Early life Hall was born on July 22, 1818, in Portland, Maine. When he was five his family moved to East Saugus, Massachusetts. He was educated in the Saugus Public Schools as well as the Lynn and New Market academies. On July 2, 1851, he married Lucinda Atherton, a native of Goffstown, New Hampshire who came to Saugus as a child when she was adopted by relative Jacob Newhall following her mother's death. They had two children, Harmon and Susie. The family resided on an estate on Chestnut Street in East Saugus. Politics Hall held numerous offices in Saugus, including town clerk, selectman, and town moderator. In 1861 he represented the 24th Essex District in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Emerson Gaylord (2 September 1817 – 24 September 1899) was an American businessman, and Republican politician who served in the Massachusetts General Court in 1880. Early life Emerson Gaylord was born in South Hadley, Massachusetts on Sept. 2, 1817 to Josiah and Lucinda Smith Gaylord. His father died in 1826 when Emerson was just 9 years old. When he was 12 he left school to support himself and family on neighboring farms. Career At the age of 17, he was apprenticed to Seth Nyms, of Amherst, to learn the harness-making business. When he returned to South Hadley, he began to learn the shoemaker's trade under George Kilbourn and then would later work in the shoe business for his cousin John Gaylord until 1840. He would go on to accept an offer of employment in Chicopee with the N.P. Ames Company a year later; working for 7 shillings a day, which later increased to one dollar and quarter a month after.
