β-Carboline, also known as norharman or as 9''H''-pyrido ,4-bndole, is a tricyclic chemical compound and alkaloid. It is the parent structure of the substituted β-carbolines, a large group of alkaloids and synthetic compounds. β-Carboline may be thought of as a cyclized tryptamine. A serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI) is a type of drug which acts as a reuptake inhibitor of the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, or 5-HT) by blocking the action of the serotonin transporter (SERT). Tryptoline, also known as tetrahydro-β-carboline and tetrahydronorharmane, is a natural organic derivative of β-carboline. It is an alkaloid chemically related to tryptamines.
