Ashgabat (Turkmen language, Turkmen: ''Aşgabat'') is the capital city, capital and largest city of Turkmenistan. It lies between the Karakum Desert and the Kopet Dag, Kopetdag mountain range in Central Asia, approximately 50 km (30 mi) away from the Iran-Turkmenistan border. The city has a population of 1,030,063 (2022 census). The city was founded in 1881 on the basis of an Ahal Teke (Turkmen tribe), Teke tribal village, and made the capital of the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic in 1924 when it was known as Poltoratsk. 2027 AFC Asian Cup Qualification – Third Round
The third round of 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualification is played from 25 March 2025 to 31 March 2026. Format A total of 24 teams (3 best ranked losing teams from the first round + 18 third and fourth-placed teams from the second round + 3 winners from the play-off round) will participate in the third round to compete for the final six slots in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup. The 24 teams will be divided into six groups of four teams to play home-and-away round-robin matches. 2024–25 AFC Challenge League
The 2024–25 AFC Challenge League was the eleventh edition of the Asia's third-tier continental club association football, football competition, organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and the first season since it was rebranded from the AFC President's Cup to the AFC Challenge League. It was the first edition since 2014 AFC President's Cup, 2014, when the tournament was re-introduced in 2024 with a revamped format. The final was played on 10 May 2025 at the Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, with Turkmenistan club FK Arkadag, Arkadag defeating Cambodian club Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng FC, Svay Rieng 2–1 to win their first Asian title. Ashgabat Stadium
The Ashgabat Stadium () is a multi-purpose stadium in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. It is currently used mostly for celebrations and football matches. The stadium holds 20,000 people and was built in 2011. Ýokary Liga football clubs of Turkmenistan hold their matches here. History In 2009, on behalf of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, funding was allocated for construction of a multipurpose stadium for events with 20,000 seats. The construction was led by Turkish company Polimeks. Opening of the stadium Ashgabat was held on 28 October 2011. The opening of the sports complex was attended by President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow.
