William Stevens Fielding
William Stevens Fielding, (November 24, 1848 – June 23, 1929) was a Canadian Liberal politician, the seventh premier of Nova Scotia (1884–96), and the federal Minister of Finance from 1896 to 1911 and again from 1921 to 1925. Early life He was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Fielding became leader of the Anti-Confederation Party (Nova Scotia Liberal Party). In 1884, he became Premier and won the 1886 election on a pledge to remove Nova Scotia from confederation. When he failed to do this, he turned to economic matters including developing the coal industry. The Liberal Party of Nova Scotia fared poorly in national elections during the 1880s and early 1890s. The national party advocated policies that would discontinue the national coal subsidy and, for all practical purposes, eliminate Catholic schools in Manitoba, policies disliked by provincial coal miners and Catholics respectively. Michael Joseph Power
Michael Joseph Power (February 23, 1834 – January 11, 1895) was a businessman and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Halifax County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1882 to 1894 as a Liberal member. He was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the son of Michael Power and Anne Lonergan. After studying at the Union Academy in Halifax, he apprenticed as a printer with the ''Acadian Recorder''. Power worked in Boston for a time before returning to Halifax. In 1860, he married Ann Sophia Kent. He opened a liquor retail business and then was a grocer. Power was a captain in the militia and served as a member of Halifax city council and chairman of the board of works. He ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the provincial assembly in 1878. Power served as speaker for the provincial assembly from 1887 to 1894. He was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1894. Fleming Blanchard McCurdy, (February 17, 1875 – August 29, 1952) was a Canadian politician. Born in Old Barns, Nova Scotia, he was elected to the House of Commons of Canada for the Nova Scotia riding of Shelburne and Queen's in the 1911 election as a Conservative. He was re-elected in the 1917 election for the riding of Colchester as a supporter of Sir Robert Laird Borden's Unionist government. In 1916, he was one of the first parliamentarians to be appointed a Parliamentary Secretary, when he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary of Militia and Defence for Sam Hughes. He was also the Parliamentary Secretary of Soldiers' Civil Re-establishment. Upon his appointment to Borden's Cabinet in 1920 as Minister of Public Works he was required by the law of the time to resign his seat and run in a by-election.
