Whitney (typeface)
Whitney is a family of Vox-ATypI classification#Humanist, humanist sans-serif digital typefaces, designed by American type designer Tobias Frere-Jones. It was originally created for New York's Whitney Museum as its institutional typeface. Two key requirements were flexibility for editorial requirements and a design consistency with the Whitney Museum's existing public signage. Typographical context Whitney was created in 2004 by the foundry of Hoefler & Frere-Jones. Whitney bridges the divide between editorial mainstays such as News Gothic (1908), which is an American Grotesque sans-serif, gothic typeface, and signage application standards such as Frutiger (typeface), Frutiger (1975), which is a European Humanist (typography), humanist typeface. Tobias Frere-Jones
Tobias Frere-Jones (born Tobias Edgar Mallory Jones, August 28, 1970) is an American type designer who works in New York City. He operates the company Frere-Jones Type and teaches typeface design at the Yale School of Art MFA program. Among his typefaces are Gotham (typeface), Gotham which was used by the Barack Obama 2008 presidential campaign, Obama 2008 presidential campaign, and Archer (typeface), Archer which has been used by ''Martha Stewart Living'' and Wells Fargo. Career Frere-Jones grew up in Brooklyn and became interested in letter design while attending Saint Ann's School (Brooklyn), Saint Ann's School.
