Vajont ( Western Friulian: ) is a valley in the area of Longarone, in the province of Pordenone, north-eastern Italy. History The municipality was founded in 1971 on the municipal territory of Maniago. It was built to rehome the people evacuated from Erto e Casso after the Vajont Dam disaster of 1963. Vajont Dam
The Vajont Dam (or Vaiont Dam) is a disused dam in northern Italy. It is one of the tallest dams in the world, with a height of . It is in the valley of the Vajont River under Monte Toc, in the municipality of Erto e Casso, north of Venice. The dam was conceived in the 1920s and eventually built between 1957 and 1960 by Società Adriatica di Elettricità (SADE), at the time the electricity supply and distribution monopoly in northeastern Italy. The engineer was Carlo Semenza (1893–1961). In 1962 the dam was nationalized and came under the control of ENEL as part of the Italian Ministry for Public Works. On 9 October 1963, during initial filling, a landslide caused a megatsunami in the lake in which of water overtopped the dam in a wave of , which brought massive flooding and destruction to the Piave Valley below, leading to the destruction of several villages and towns, causing between 1,900 and 2,500 estimated deaths. Erto e Casso (local fur, Nert and ) is an Italian municipality in the Province of Pordenone in the Italian region Friuli-Venezia Giulia, located about northwest of Trieste and about northwest of Pordenone. Geography The commune consists of Erto (the municipal seat, population: 341), Casso (population: 35), and some smaller places: Cavalle, Col della Ruava, Forcai, Liron, Pineda, San Martino and Val del Pont. Erto e Casso borders the municipalities of Castellavazzo, Cimolais, Claut, Longarone, Ospitale di Cadore, Perarolo di Cadore, Alpago and Soverzene. Longarone
Longarone is a town and ''comune'' on the banks of the Piave in the province of Belluno, in northeast Italy. It is situated from Belluno. 4,642 people work all together in Longarone, which is 112.62% of the total population, with most actual inhabitants working within the village. Geography The town is located on a road linking Belluno to Cortina d'Ampezzo, close to the borders of Veneto with Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Its nearest villages are Castellavazzo, Casso and Erto.
