USS Cheboygan County (LST-533)
USS ''Cheboygan County'' (LST-533) was an built for the United States Navy during World War II. Named for Cheboygan County, Michigan, she has so far been the only U.S. Naval vessel to bear the name. The name Cheboygan also means "Big Boat". ''LST-533'' was laid down on 29 September 1943 at Evansville, Indiana, by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Company; launched on 1 December 1943; sponsored by Mrs. H. D. Peoples; and commissioned on 27 January 1944. Service history During World War II, ''LST-533'' was assigned to the European Theater. She participated in the Invasion of Normandy. Cheboygan County ( ) is a county in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 25,579. The county seat is Cheboygan. The county boundaries were set off in 1840, with land partitioned from Mackinac County. The Cheboygan County government was organized in 1853. Etymology of the name Cheboygan The name of the county shares the same origin as that of the Cheboygan River, although the precise meaning is no longer known. It may have come from an Ojibwe word ''zhaabonigan,'' meaning "sewing needle". Alternatively, the origin may have been ''Chabwegan,'' meaning "a place of ore". The Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co., also known as Missouri Valley Bridge Company, was a engineering, construction, and steel fabrication firm that operated through the late nineteenth and most of the twentieth centuries. It was based in Leavenworth, Kansas, with a WWII facility in Evansville, Indiana. History The company was formed in 1874 by Edwin Farnsworth and D. W. Eaves in Leavenworth, Kansas. In 1888, it was acquired by Alonzo. J. Tullock, who had previously served as the engineer and manager of the firm. Katherine S. Tullock, Alonzo's widow, served as the president from 1907 to 1921, an unusual development for the time in a male-dominated field. Her son, Hubert S. Tullock became president of the firm in 1921.
