Tropical Storm Carol was used for eight tropical cyclones world wide: three in the Atlantic Ocean, four in the Australian region of the Indian Ocean and one in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. In the Atlantic: * Hurricane Carol (1953), a Category 5 Cape Verde-type hurricane that made landfall in New Brunswick as a minimal hurricane. * Hurricane Carol (1954), a Category 3 hurricane that made landfall on Long Island, New York, and then in Connecticut. * Hurricane Carol (1965), a long-lived Category 1 hurricane that remained in the open ocean. A tropical cyclone is a rapidly rotating storm system characterized by a low-pressure center, a closed low-level atmospheric circulation, strong winds, and a spiral arrangement of thunderstorms that produce heavy rain and squalls. Hurricane Carol (1953)
Hurricane Carol was one of only five Category 5 Atlantic hurricanes to not have its name be retired (although the 1954 Hurricane Carol was retired), the other names being Esther, Edith, Emily and Lorenzo. Carol was also the strongest storm of the 1953 Atlantic hurricane season and the first Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic basin since the 1944 Great Atlantic Hurricane. Carol is also the first named storm to attain Category 5 status. Carol developed on August 28 off the west coast of Africa, although the Weather Bureau did not initiate advisories until five days later. Hurricane Carol
Hurricane Carol was among the worst tropical cyclones on record to affect the states of Connecticut and Rhode Island in the United States. It developed from a tropical wave near the Bahamas on August 25, 1954, and slowly strengthened as it moved northwestward. On August 27, Carol intensified to reach winds of 105 mph (165 km/h), but weakened as its motion turned to a northwest drift. A strong trough of low pressure turned the hurricane northeastward, and Carol later intensified into a major hurricane. The 1965 Atlantic hurricane season was the first to use the modern-day bounds for an Atlantic hurricane season, which are June 1 to November 30. These dates conventionally delimit the period of each year when most tropical cyclones form in the Atlantic basin. The 1975–76 Australian region cyclone season was an above average tropical cyclone season. Systems Severe Tropical Cyclone Ray Severe Tropical Cyclone Joan On the morning of November 30, 1975, satellite imagery showed a large cloud mass in the Timor Sea. The satellite photograph received on the morning of December 1 showed that significant organization had occurred in the cloud mass during the previous 24 hours. The 1980–81 Australian region cyclone season was an above average tropical cyclone season. It officially started on 1 November 1980 and officially ended on 30 April 1981.
