Transpacific Yacht Club
The Transpacific Yacht Club (TPYC) is responsible for organizing the world-renowned Transpacific Yacht Race ("the Transpac") from Los Angeles to Honolulu. Transpac The Transpac is held in odd numbered years. The Transpac Race was originally the vision of Hawaii’s King Kalākaua as a way to build the islands' ties with the mainland U.S. Since its humble beginning in 1906, the Transpac has become the oldest and longest enduring ocean race in the world and a “must do” on many sailors' list of races. Tahiti Race Over the years TPYC has also been responsible for organizing the Los Angeles to Tahiti Race. The Tahiti Race was most recently held in April and May, 2022. Club information TPYC was officially organized in 1928, and incorporated in 1937. Membership in the Club is open to all sailors who have completed a race held by the Club. The Transpacific Yacht Race (Transpac) is a biennial offshore yacht race held in odd-numbered years starting off the Pt. Fermin buoy in San Pedro, California and ending off Diamond Head in Hawaii, a distance of around . In even-numbered years the Pacific Cup race starts out of San Francisco and is run by the Pacific Cup Yacht Club. Started in 1906 by Clarence W. Macfarlane and hosted by Los Angeles Yacht Club, it is one of yachting's premier offshore races and attracts entrants from all over the world. The race is organized by the Transpacific Yacht Club. The race is famous for fast downwind sailing under spinnaker in the trade winds. Kalākaua
Kalākaua (David Laʻamea Kamananakapu Mahinulani Naloiaehuokalani Lumialani Kalākaua; November 16, 1836 – January 20, 1891), sometimes called The Merrie Monarch, was the last king and penultimate monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi, reigning from February 12, 1874, until his death in 1891. Succeeding Lunalilo, he was elected to the vacant throne of Hawaiʻi against Queen Emma. Kalākaua had a convivial personality and enjoyed entertaining guests with his singing and ukulele playing.
