The Moises Padilla Story
''The Moises Padilla Story'' is a 1961 Philippine bio-pic directed by Gerardo de León. The film was selected as the Philippine entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 34th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee. The film is a biography of a Negros Occidental mayoral candidate who in 1951, was tortured and murdered by the private army of the provincial governor after he had refused to withdraw his candidacy. The film is still extant and has been restored in 4K resolution by the Philippine Film Archive and Central Digital Lab in 2022. The restored version was premiered on September 2, 2022, in celebration of the Philippine Film Industry Month. Gerardo De León
Gerardo de León, National Artist of the Philippines, ONA (September 12, 1913 – July 25, 1981), was a Philippines, Filipino film director and actor. Biography De León, who was born Gerardo Ilagan, was a member of the Ilagan clan of Philippine motion pictures, which includes Robert Arevalo, Conrado Conde, Angel Esmeralda, Eddie Ilagan, musical scorer Tito Arévalo, and his daughter Liberty Ilagan. De León was a medical doctor by profession, but his ultimate love for film won him over. He made his acting debut in the 1934 film ''Ang Dangal''. He acted in eight other films before becoming a director. The first film he directed was ''Bahay-Kubo'' (1939), starring Fely Vallejo, an actress whom he later married. Lilia Dizon
Claire Dizon Strauss (1928 – June 15, 2020) professionally known as Lilia Dizon was a Filipina actress active in the 1940s and 1950s. Personal life She was the only daughter of Regina Dizon, a Filipino, and Abraham "Abe" Strauss, an American of German Jewish descent. At the age of 15, she and her mother relocated to Manila from Baguio following the Second World War after her father left for America and then, she started performing in the theater under the name "Carol Strauss". She was the wife of LVN Pictures actor Gil de León, with whom she had three children who would each eventually become actors as well: Pinky de Leon, Christopher de Leon and Melissa de Leon. She had a second husband, Antonio V. Abad with whom she had two daughters Toni Abad and Cori Abad. She retired from showbiz during the 1980s. Monang Carvajal (born Patrocinio Tagaroma Carvajal; June 30, 1898 – 22 June 1980) was a Filipina film actress best known for her roles in thriller and horror movies. She was dubbed the "Queen of Horror Pictures." Biography Carvajal was born in Manila on June 30, 1898, the daughter of Spanish Zarzuela actors Don Jose Carvajal and Patrocinio Tagaroma de Carvajal. By the age of 4, she was appearing on stage, appearing alongside her parents. In her teens, she was touring the bodabil circuit together with Manuel Silos as a comedy duo known as "Monang & Sano." Rosa Aguirre (1908–1981) was a Filipina actress who worked for Sampaguita Pictures and Lvn Pictures. She was married to actor Miguel Anzures and mother to controversial actor Narding Anzures. She made her first movie on 1938, ''Himagsikan ng Puso'', with Rudy Concepcion. Aguirre completed 13 movies when World War II broke the city of Manila. Under X'Otic Pictures and Eiga Hekusa she made one film during Japanese Occupation, '' Liwayway ng Kalayaan'' (Dawn of Freedom). In 1946, she made one war movie ''Death March'' under Philippine Pictures Inc., opposite Leopoldo Salcedo, ''Daily Doble'', for Fernando Poe Production in 1947. Aguirre made two movies under Nolasco Bros, ''Siete Dolores'' (Seven Sorrows) and ''Mga Busabos ng Palad'' (Slaves of Hand). Max Alvarado (February 19, 1929 – April 6, 1997) was a FAMAS award-winning Filipino film actor known mainly by his portrayals of villains in a career which spanned six decades. Early life Max Alvarado was born as Gavino Maximo Teodosio in Manila. In his youth, he was a member of street gangs, as well as an itinerant manual laborer. Career He broke into films in 1948 as a bit player in ''Halik sa Bandila''. Leopoldo Salcedo (March 12, 1912 – June 11, 1998) was a Filipino film actor dubbed as "The Great Profile" who specialized in portraying dramatic heroes. Early life Salcedo was born in Cavite. His father was of Spanish descent whose family immigrated in the Philippines years prior. His mother was a Filipina. In his youth, he had entered the seminary with aspirations towards priesthood, but he left after a year. Instead, he joined the bodabil troupe of Lou Borromeo in 1929. By 1934, Salcedo had broken into films, starring in José Nepomuceno's ''Sawing Palad''. He was playing leading roles by the late 1930s, and signed up with the newly formed LVN studio.
