Tareq Rahman
Tarique Rahman (born 20 November 1965), better known natively as Tarique Zia, is a Bangladeshi politician and businessman who has been the acting chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) since February 2018. He is the eldest son of former Bangladeshi president Ziaur Rahman and the first female prime minister of Bangladesh, Khaleda Zia. He is also the publisher of Daily Dinkal. Tarique is often described as the de facto leader of the opposition in Bangladesh. In 2018, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for organising the 2004 Dhaka grenade attack by the then-Awami League government. His associates claim these were false allegations and a political ploy. He was later acquitted of the charge by the court in 2024 and his sentence canceled. 2008 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 29 December 2008. The two main parties in the election were the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Khaleda Zia, and the Bangladesh Awami League Party, led by Sheikh Hasina. The Bangladesh Awami League Party formed a fourteen-party Grand Alliance (Bangladesh), Grand Alliance including Hussain Muhammad Ershad, Ershad's Jatiya Party (Ershad), Jatiya Party, while the BNP formed a four-party alliance which included the Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, Jamaat-e-Islami. 2004 Dhaka Grenade Attack
The 2004 Dhaka grenade attack took place at an anti-terrorism rally organised by Awami League in Bangabandhu Avenue (now Shaheed Abrar Fahad Avenue) on 21 August 2004. The attack left 24 dead and more than 500 injured. The attack was carried out at 5:22 PM after Sheikh Hasina, the then leader of opposition had finished addressing a crowd of 20,000 people from the back of a truck used as the stage. Hasina also sustained some injuries in the attack. Events and casualties Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina had been speaking at a public meeting in Bangabandhu Avenue, protesting against blasts against AL workers in Sylhet. Dainik Dinkal is a daily newspaper published in the Bengali language. The newspaper is also known as the mouthpiece of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and is published from Dhaka. On February 19, 2023, the Bangladesh Press Council announced the closure of the publication of the newspaper. However later on 11 August 2024, the publication of the newspaper was approved.
