Suraxanı (town)
Suraxanı or Surakhany ( az, Suraxanı) is a town in the eastern part of Azerbaijan, administrative center of Suraxanı raion of Baku agglomeration. It is located in the Absheron peninsula, at an altitude of 12 meters above sea level, 30 km to the north-east from Baku. A name of the city is translated as “warm house” from the Tat language. From times immemorial outskirts of Suraxanı were famed for abundance of oil wells. The first oil refinery in the world was built in Suraxanı on the initiative of Vasily Kokorev, in 1857. Dmitri Mendeleev worked in this refinery as a consultant. Suraxanı Raion
Suraxanı () is a settlement and raion of Baku, Azerbaijan. It has a population of 210,500. The region is best known for the Fire Temple of Baku on the northern edge of town, a castle-like temple and monastery complex known locally as the ''Ateşgah'' or ''Ateshgyakh''. It was a Zoroastrian temple. The complex was built on a pocket of natural gas that once produced a flame from natural gas seepage. The local Tat name of the raion is said to related to "the Persian words 'Surakh' (hole) or Surkh/ Sorkh (red) and 'khani' (source or fountain). According to historical sources, before the construction of the Parsi Temple Of Fire (Atashgah) in Surakhany at the end of the 18th century, the local people also worshipped at this site because of the 'seven holes with burning flame'. Absheron Peninsula
The Absheron Peninsula ( az, Abşeron yarımadası) is a peninsula in Azerbaijan. It is the location of Baku, the biggest and the most populous city of the country, and also the Baku metropolitan area, with its satellite cities Sumqayit and Khyrdalan. There are three districts, of which two are urban (Baku and Sumqayit), and one, (Absheron Rayon), is suburban district in Absheron region. It extends eastward into the Caspian Sea, and reaches a maximum width of . Though technically the easternmost extension of the Caucasus Mountains, the landscape is only mildly hilly, a gently undulating plain that ends in a long spit of sand dunes known as Shah Dili, and now declared the Absheron National Park. Vasily Aleksandrovich Kokorev (Russian: Василий Александрович Кокорев, 23 April 1817, Soligalich - 22 April 1889, Saint Petersburg) was one of the wealthiest men in Russia. In addition to being a landowner, entrepreneur and philanthropist, he was a noted art collector and an honorary member of the Imperial Academy of Arts. Biography He was born to a family of Old Believers. His father was a merchant, who owned a small salt processing plant. After his parents had died, he became a co-owner of the plant and served as its manager from 1836 to 1841. At that time, the import duty on salt was abolished, the plant became unprofitable, and he left to seek his fortune elsewhere. He began as an assistant manager at a distillery in Orenburg Governorate then, in 1842, became a clerk for a wine farmer in Kazan. Sabunçu (also, Sabunchi and Sabunchy) is a settlement and municipality in Baku, Azerbaijan. It has a population of 22,344.
