St Mary Peak
__NOTOC__ St Mary Peak / Ngarri Mudlanha is a mountain located in the Australian state of South Australia on the northwestern side of Ikara. It is the highest peak in the Flinders Ranges and the eighth highest peak in South Australia, with a height of . It is located within the Ikara–Flinders Ranges National Park and the gazetted locality of Flinders Ranges, South Australia. It was for a time known as "St Mary's Peak", but was renamed according to guidelines deprecating the use of names implying possession. The Adnyamathanha people have expressed concern with tourists trekking to the peak as they regard it as a sacred place and not to be visited. However, the peak and its surroundings may be accessed via a walking trail from Wilpena Resort along the north-east edge of the range outside of Ikara, or via a longer trail through the middle of the pound. __NOTOC__ Flinders Ranges is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located in the mountain range of the same name, about north of the state capital of Adelaide, about north-east of the municipal seat in Quorn and about north-east of the regional centre of Port Augusta. Its boundaries were created in April 2013, with the name selected in respect to the ‘long established local name’. Its southern boundary was altered in November 2013 with the addition of land from Hawker and the transfer of land to Shaggy Ridge. The sites of the government towns of Edeowie and Mernmerna are also within its boundaries. These town were both surveyed in 1863. Edeowie Post Office was open from to 1876 and then from 1879 to 1881, while Mernmerna Post Office was open from 1874 to 1881 and then again for a period in 1905. Flinders Ranges
The Flinders Ranges are the largest mountain range in South Australia, which starts about north of Adelaide. The ranges stretch for over from Port Pirie to Lake Callabonna. The Adnyamathanha people are the Aboriginal group who have inhabited the range for tens of thousands of years. Its most well-known landmark is Wilpena Pound / Ikara, a formation that creates a natural amphitheatre covering and containing the range's highest peak, St Mary Peak (). The ranges include several national parks, the largest being the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park, as well as other protected areas. Wilpena Pound – also known by its Adnyamathanha language, Adnyamathanha name of Ikara, meaning "meeting place" – is a natural amphitheatre of mountains located north of Adelaide, South Australia, Australia in the heart of the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. Adnyamathanha
The Adnyamathanha (Pronounced: ) are a contemporary Aboriginal Australian people of the northern Flinders Ranges, South Australia, formed as an aggregate of several distinct peoples. Strictly speaking the ethnonym Adnyamathanha was an alternative name for the Wailpi, but the grouping also includes the Guyani, Jadliaura, Pilatapa and sometimes the Barngarla peoples. The origin of the name is in the words "adnya" ("rock") and "matha" ("group" or "group of people"). Adnyamathanha is also often used as the name of their traditional language, although the language is more commonly called "yura ngarwala" by Adnyamathanha people themselves (roughly translated as "our speech"), and they refer to themselves as "yura". There is a community of Adnyamathanha people at Nepabunna, just west of the Gammon Ranges, which was established as a mission station in 1931.
