Sevan, Armenia
Sevan ( hy, Սեւան) is a town and urban municipal community, as well as one of the most popular resorts in Armenia, located in the Gegharkunik Province on the northwestern shores of Lake Sevan. The town is built at a height of more than above sea level, northeast of the capital Yerevan, and north of the provincial centre Gavar. Sevan is surrounded by the Sevan National Park, a natural protected area extending from the northeastern parts of the town to the southwest, while Lake Sevan forms the natural border of the city to the east. As of the 2011 census, the population of the town was 19,229, and as per the 2016 official estimate, the population of Sevan is 19,200. Sevan Bıçakçı () (born 1972) is a famed Turkish jeweller of Armenian descent. He is one of the few renowned jewelers in Turkey and is known around the world. He is considered a "star jeweler" in Turkey. Life and career Of Armenian descent, Sevan Bıçakçı was born in 1972 in the Samatya district of Istanbul, Turkey. He is known as the 'King of Rings'. At the age of 12, his father, who was a theater actor, placed Sevan under the apprenticeship of Hovsep Catak in the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul. After serving 4 years of apprenticeship, his master died. However, he had learned a great deal about jewellery design and craftsmanship. He then opened a workshop in order to serve bigger manufacturers as a freelance jewel designer. Sevan Trout
The Sevan trout (''Salmo ischchan'') is an endemic fish species of Lake Sevan in Armenia, known as ishkhan (իշխան, ) in Armenian. It is a salmonid fish related to the brown trout. The fish is endangered, because various competitors were introduced into the lake during the Soviet period, including common whitefish (''Coregonus lavaretus'') from Lake Ladoga, goldfish (''Carassius auratus'') and narrow-clawed crayfish (''Astacus leptodactylus''); and because of lake level change. On the other hand, the Sevan trout itself has been successfully introduced to Issyk Kul lake in Kyrgyzstan. Sevan Malikyan (, born on September 4, 1972 in London) is British expressive artist of Armenian ancestry. Career Sevan Malikyan was born in 1972 in London. Sevan's father, Kevork Malikyan (born in June, 1943), is an Anglo-Armenian actor from Diyarbakır, Turkey. He went on to the U.K. in 1963 with a drama scholarship and studied at Rose Bruford Drama School. Sevan's mother Maida Malikyan (born in August, 1947) from Nicosia, Cyprus, went to the U.K. in 1959 and went to become a hair stylist in London where they met. A studio based painter, Sevan is considered one of the young outstanding artists of his generation with many exhibitions. Sevan Nişanyan ( hyw, Սեւան Նշանեան; born 21 December 1956) is a Turkish-Armenian writer and linguist. An author of a number of books ("The Wrong Republic", "The Etymological Dictionary" and others), Nişanyan was awarded the Ayşe Nur Zarakolu Liberty Award of the Turkish Human Rights Association in 2004 for his contributions to greater freedom of speech. He is also known for his work to restore a semi-derelict village, Şirince, near Turkey’s Aegean coast. Lake Sevan ( hy, Սևանա լիճ, Sevana lich) is the largest body of water in both Armenia and the Caucasus region. It is one of the largest freshwater high-altitude (alpine) lakes in Eurasia. The lake is situated in Gegharkunik Province, at an altitude of above sea level. The total surface area of its basin is about , which makes up of Armenia's territory. The lake itself is , and the volume is . It is fed by 28 rivers and streams. Only 10% of the incoming water is drained by the Hrazdan River, while the remaining 90% evaporates.
