Sacred Heart Church, Keamari
Sacred Heart Church is a 150-year-old church in a parish of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Karachi in Pakistan. On September 18, 2011, Archbishop Evarist Pinto and eight priests celebrated Mass for over a thousand people to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Church. History The present church building was built in 1922 with funds provided by the Karachi Port Trust. There were approximately 200 Christian families living in Keamari at the time. In 1923 the Sacred Heart school was constructed. The medium of instruction was originally the Marathi language. The church has been heritage-listed. In 1969 the Church caught fire and much of it was destroyed. The cause of the fire was never known. It was rebuilt with much of its essence being saved as possible. Roman Catholic Archdiocese Of Karachi
The Archdiocese of Karachi is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or archdiocese of the Catholic Church in India. It was erected on 20 May 1948 under as a then-suffragan diocese in the ecclesiastical province of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Bombay. History The Augustinians were the first to start a mission in the village of Kolachi in the 17th century. They were followed by the Discalced Carmelites who worked in the area until 1672. Around 1842–1843, the Carmelites once again attended to the spiritual needs of the British troops. The Capuchin order served from 1852 and then the Jesuits from 1856 to 1934. On June 1, 1934, it was declared a Mission under the Franciscans. It was elevated as the Archdiocese of Karachi on 15 July 1950 when the priests of the Archdiocese took over the management from the Franciscans. Evarist Pinto (born 31 December 1933 in Goa, Portuguese India) is the former archbishop of Karachi, Pakistan. Education He was educated at St. Thomas High School, Goa, India. In 1960 he started studying for priesthood at the St. Pius X Minor Seminary in Quetta. He continued his religious training at the Christ the King Seminary in Karachi, where he was ordained a priest on 6 January 1968. He is fluent in 10 languages including English, Urdu, Punjabi, Hebrew, Greek, Latin, Italian, German, French and Konkani. Career Father Pinto taught Sacred Scripture at Christ the King Seminary and from 1987 to 1993 was pastor of St. Lawrence’s Church, Karachi. He obtained a doctorate in biblical theology at the Urbanian University, Rome, and a master's degree in sacred scripture at the "Biblicum". Keamari
Keamari ( sd, ڪياماڙي, ur, کیماڑی ) is a neighbourhood in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. Keamari was originally an independent settlement that was built on a sandy ridge on the eastern side of Karachi Harbour. History Keamari was a low lying island located between Manora and the city of Karachi well into the colonial era. During this time, Keamari was the landing point for all goods and people entering Karachi. Kemari's anchorage during the early colonial era was too shallow for large ships, and so those were instead forced to dock at Manora. The 3 mile long Napier Mole Road was built in 1854 as a raised embankment which connected Karachi with Keamari. St. Vincent's Home for the Aged in Karachi, Pakistan is a home for older people. St. Vincent’s Home for the Aged is situated off the main Shara-e-Faisal. It is a home for the very poor and destitute. It was inaugurated and blessed by Cardinal Joseph Cordeiro, Archbishop of Karachi on 12 September 1960. It consisted of three separate blocks. Each consisting of six rooms and approximately 35 residents could be accommodated – two or three persons to a room.
