Sutton (constructor)
Sutton was an American racing car constructor which participated in a single FIA World Championship race - the 1959 Indianapolis 500. They scored no championship points. Their car, a Dayton Steel Foundry/Walther, was powered by a KK500G Offenhauser I4 engine and was driven by Mike Magill. Qualifying in 31st place, the car completed 45 laps before an accident forced Magill's retirement. Magill was squeezed into the outside wall by the spinning car of Chuck Weyant, and Magill flipped over, sliding upside down off the track and into the infield. 1959 Indianapolis 500
The 43rd International 500-Mile Sweepstakes was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday, May 30, 1959. The event was part of the 1959 USAC National Championship Trail and was also race 2 of 9 in the 1959 World Championship of Drivers. Rodger Ward earned the first of two career Indy 500 victories. A record sixteen cars completed the full 500 miles. All cars were required to have roll bars for the first time. Practice and time trials Two drivers, Jerry Unser and Bob Cortner, were killed in separate crashes during the month. On May 2, Unser lost control in Turn Four, spun, and flipped down the main stretch. The car caught fire and Unser suffered significant burns; he died from complications of his burns on May 17. The Offenhauser Racing Engine, or Offy, is a racing engine design that dominated American open wheel racing for more than 50 years and is still popular among vintage sprint and midget car racers. History The Offenhauser engine, familiarly known as the "Offy", was an overhead cam monoblock 4-stroke internal combustion engine developed by Fred Offenhauser and Harry Arminius Miller. Originally, it was sold as a marine engine. In 1930 a four-cylinder Miller engine installed in a race car set a new international land speed record of . Mike Magill
Charles Michael Magill (February 8, 1920; Haddonfield, New Jersey – August 31, 2006; Haddonfield, New Jersey) was an American racecar driver. After serving in the Army during World War II, Magill raced in the AAA and USAC Championship Car series from 1955 to 1959, with 15 career starts. He finished in the top ten 7 times, with his best finish in 4th position in 1955 at Langhorne. Magill competed in the Indianapolis 500 three times, with his first start coming in 1957. The next year, when racing legend Juan Manuel Fangio was unable to compete due to a contractual conflict, Magill drove the car in which Fangio had been practicing. He was involved in an accident in the first lap of the race but, after over an hour in the pits, he returned to the track to finish 17th. Chuck Weyant
Chuck Weyant (April 3, 1923 – January 24, 2017) was an American racecar driver. He was born in St. Mary's, Ohio. Until his death, Weyant was the oldest living Indianapolis 500 veteran. He died on January 24, 2017, at the age of 93. Midget cars Weyant came from a racing family. He started out racing against his brother and father in the early 1940s before the US joined World War II. He had his first win in 1947 after the war. Weyant won track titles at Charleston and Belleville, Illinois. The finished in the top 25 in the National points battle nine times between 1951 and 1971. The 1959 Formula One season was the 13th season of FIA Formula One motor racing.
