Susan Ellis (geophysicist)
Susan Marian Ellis (born 1965) is a geophysicist based in New Zealand, who specialises in modelling the geodynamics of the Earth's crust deformation, at different scales. Ellis is a principal scientist at GNS Science and her main interests are in subduction, seismology, tectonics, crust and petrology. Ellis's current work focuses on the influence of faulting on stresses in the crust, and how this is related to geological hazard and the tectonic settings in New Zealand. Education Born in 1965, Ellis earned a Bachelor of Science degree with honours at Victoria University of Wellington. She subsequently completed her PhD in 1995 at Dalhousie University, where she examined the forces driving continental collision using numerical models, applied to Tibet and New Zealand. This was followed by postdoctoral fellowships at Dalhousie University (1996–1997), as part of the Lithoprobe programme, and the University of Berne, studying the geodynamics of the Swiss Alps. Susan Wild (née Ellis; born June 7, 1957) is an American lawyer and former politician from Pennsylvania. A Democrat, she represented in the United States House of Representatives from January 2018 to January 2025. The district is in the Lehigh Valley region of eastern Pennsylvania, and includes Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, and Bangor. She was defeated by Republican Ryan Mackenzie in 2024 Wild spent the last two months of 2018 as the member for after Charlie Dent, former U.S. representative for the district, resigned in 2018. Susan Caroline Williams-Ellis (6 June 1918 – 26 November 2007) was a British pottery designer, who was best known for co-founding Portmeirion Pottery. She was the eldest daughter of Sir Clough Williams-Ellis. Background Williams-Ellis was born in Guildford, Surrey, England, in the house of artist and critic Roger Fry. Her father, Sir Clough, was an eminent architect; Williams-Ellis' mother was writer Amabel Strachey, cousin of author and Bloomsbury figure Lytton Strachey. Her parents were friends of other members of the Bloomsbury Group, including Augustus John and Virginia Woolf. Williams-Ellis' godfather was Rudyard Kipling.
