Susan Ellis (geophysicist)
Susan Marian Ellis (born 1965) is a geophysicist based in New Zealand, who specialises in modelling the geodynamics of the Earth's crust deformation, at different scales. Ellis is a principal scientist at GNS Science and her main interests are in subduction, seismology, tectonics, crust and petrology. Ellis's current work focuses on the influence of faulting on stresses in the crust, and how this is related to geological hazard and the tectonic settings in New Zealand. Education Born in 1965, Ellis earned a Bachelor of Science degree with honours at Victoria University of Wellington. She subsequently completed her PhD in 1995 at Dalhousie University, where she examined the forces driving continental collision using numerical models, applied to Tibet and New Zealand. This was followed by postdoctoral fellowships at Dalhousie University (1996–1997), as part of the Lithoprobe programme, and the University of Berne, studying the geodynamics of the Swiss Alps. Geophysics () is a subject of natural science concerned with the physical processes and properties of Earth and its surrounding space environment, and the use of quantitative methods for their analysis. Geophysicists conduct investigations across a wide range of scientific disciplines. The term ''geophysics'' classically refers to solid earth applications: Earth's shape; its gravitational, magnetic fields, and electromagnetic fields; its internal structure and composition; its dynamics and their surface expression in plate tectonics, the generation of magmas, volcanism and rock formation. Taupō Volcanic Zone
The Taupō Volcanic Zone (TVZ) is a volcano, volcanic area in the North Island of New Zealand. It has been active for at least the past two million years and is still highly active. Mount Ruapehu marks its south-western end and the zone runs north-eastward through the Taupō and Rotorua areas and offshore into the Bay of Plenty. It is part of a larger Central Volcanic Region that extends to the Coromandel Peninsula and has been active for four million years. The zone is contained within the Tectonics, tectonic intra-arc continental Taupō Rift and this rift volcanic zone is widening unevenly east–west, with the greatest rate of widening at the Bay of Plenty coast, the least at Mount Ruapehu and a rate of about per year at Taupō. A woman is an adult female human. Before adulthood, a female child or adolescent is referred to as a girl. Donna Eberhart-Phillips
Donna Eberhart-Phillips is a geologist known for her research on subduction zones, especially in Alaska and New Zealand. Education and career Eberhart-Phillips earned her Ph.D. in 1989 from Stanford University where she worked on the tectonic processes in California. As of 2021, Eberhart-Phillips has joint appointments at the University of California, Davies and GNS Science in Dunedin, New Zealand. In 2018, Eberhart-Phillips was named a fellow of the American Geophysical Union who cited her "for fundamental contributions to the seismotectonic analysis of subduction zones and fault zones and innovations in seismic tomography."
