Suai, East Timor
Suai is a city in Timor-Leste, in Suai Subdistrict. It has a population of 9,866 and is located to the southwest of Dili, the national capital. Suai is the capital of the Cova Lima District, which is in the southwest of the country. It is located just a few kilometers from the Timor Sea, on the south side of the island. Suai was the location of the Suai Church Massacre in September 1999. It was one of a number of massacres perpetrated by a pro-Indonesia militia in the time of the Indonesian withdrawal of East Timor. Suai Church Massacre
The Suai Church massacre occurred on 6 September 1999, in Suai, Cova Lima District in southwestern East Timor, two days after the results of the independence referendum were announced. Massacre According to the International Commission of Inquiry on East Timor's report to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, several hundred persons had sought refuge in the Ave Maria church from attacks of the pro-Indonesia Laksaur militia in the city. Then the militia, with the support of the military of Indonesia, killed up to 345 people. Twenty-six bodies were identified that had been buried across the border in West Timor, but eyewitnesses claim many more were killed. Suai Referral Hospital
Suai Referral Hospital (; ) is a hospital in Suai, Cova Lima Municipality, Timor-Leste. One of the country's five referral hospitals, it provides primary and secondary care, with patients in need of advanced care transferred to the Guido Valadares National Hospital in the capital, Dili. The hospital was established during the Indonesian occupation period (1975–1999) and reconstructed in the late 2000s. History The Suai hospital was established during the Indonesian occupation period (1975–1999), though initially it was an internment clinic and did not perform operations. In 1999, after the independence referendum, the hospital was in a state of ruin. The Timor Sea (, , or ) is a relatively shallow sea in the Indian Ocean bounded to the north by the island of Timor with Timor-Leste to the north, Indonesia to the northwest, Arafura Sea to the east, and to the south by Australia.
