Siamon Gordon
Siamon Gordon (born 29 April 1938) is a British pathologist. He is Glaxo Wellcome Professor Emeritus of Cellular Pathology at the University of Oxford. Education He gained his medical degrees ( M.B. and Ch.B.) from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He earned his PhD from Rockefeller University, where he taught from 1971 to 1976. The rest of his career, from 1976 to 2008, was at the University of Oxford. Career and research He was on the Faculty of 1000. He was a visiting scientist at the NIH. He is on the Scientific Advisory Board of the American Asthma Foundation. Gordon is noted for his work on the phenotypic and functional diversity of macrophages. He began his studies on macrophages while in the laboratory of Zanvil Cohn at Rockefeller University in 1966. Jonathan M. Austyn is Professor of Immunobiology at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford. He has taught immunology over many years, and designed the Master of Science course in Integrated Immunology at the University of Oxford, which he co-directs. The Sir William Dunn School of Pathology is a department within the University of Oxford. Its research programme includes the cellular and molecular biology of pathogens, the immune response, cancer and cardiovascular disease. Pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) play a crucial role in the proper function of the innate immune system. PRRs are germline-encoded host sensors, which detect molecules typical for the pathogens. They are proteins expressed mainly by cells of the innate immune system, such as dendritic cells, macrophages, monocytes, neutrophils, as well as by epithelial cells, to identify two classes of molecules: pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs), which are associated with microbial pathogens, and damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), which are associated with components of host's cells that are released during cell damage or death.
