Shmuel Friedland
Shmuel Friedland (born 1944 in Tashkent, Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic) is an Israeli-American mathematician. Friedland studied at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, graduating in 1967 with bachelor's degree and in 1971 with doctorate of science under the supervision of Binjamin Schwarz. As a postdoc Friedland was in 1972/73 at the Weizmann Institute, in 1973/74 at Stanford University, and in 1974/75 at the Institute for Advanced Study. Then he taught at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he became in 1982 a full professor. In 1985 he became a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Besides linear algebra (matrix theory), Friedland does research on a wide variety of mathematics, including complex dynamics and applied mathematics. With Elizabeth Gross, he proved a set-theoretic version of the ''salmon conjecture'' posed by Elizabeth S. Allman. Tashkent
Tashkent (, uz, Toshkent, Тошкент/, ) (from russian: Ташкент), or Toshkent (; ), also historically known as Chach is the capital and largest city of Uzbekistan. It is the most populous city in Central Asia, with a population of 2,909,500 (2022). It is in northeastern Uzbekistan, near the border with Kazakhstan. Tashkent comes from the Turkic ''tash'' and ''kent'', literally translated as "Stone City" or "City of Stones". The International Linear Algebra Society (ILAS) is a professional mathematical society organized to promote research and education in linear algebra, matrix theory and matrix computation. Lek-Heng Lim
Lek-Heng Lim () is a Singaporean mathematician. Lim earned a bachelor's degree at the National University of Singapore, studied for his master's at Cornell University and the University of Cambridge, and completed a doctorate at Stanford University. Lim started his teaching career at the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as Charles Morrey Assistant Professor. He later joined the University of Chicago faculty. While affiliated with Chicago, Lim won the James H. Wilkinson Prize in Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing and in 2017, followed by the 2020 Hans Schneider Prize in Linear Algebra. John Willard Milnor
John Willard Milnor (born February 20, 1931) is an American mathematician known for his work in differential topology, algebraic K-theory and low-dimensional holomorphic dynamical systems. Milnor is a distinguished professor at Stony Brook University and one of the five mathematicians to have won the Fields Medal, the Wolf Prize, and the Abel Prize (the others being Serre, Thompson, Deligne, and Margulis.) Noga Alon ( he, נוגה אלון; born 17 February 1956) is an Israeli mathematician and a professor of mathematics at Princeton University noted for his contributions to combinatorics and theoretical computer science, having authored hundreds of papers. ''Advances in Mathematics'' is a peer-reviewed scientific journal covering research on pure mathematics. It was established in 1961 by Gian-Carlo Rota. The journal publishes 18 issues each year, in three volumes. At the origin, the journal aimed at publishing articles addressed to a broader "mathematical community", and not only to mathematicians in the author's field. Herbert Busemann writes, in the preface of the first issue, "The need for expository articles addressing either all mathematicians or only those in somewhat related fields has long been felt, but little has been done outside of the USSR. Walter Hayman
Walter Kurt Hayman FRS (6 January 1926 – 1 January 2020) was a British mathematician known for contributions to complex analysis. He was a professor at Imperial College London. Life and work Hayman was born in Cologne, Germany, the son of Roman law professor Franz Haymann (1874-1947) and Ruth Therese Hensel, daughter of mathematician Kurt Hensel. He was a great-grandson of acclaimed composer Fanny Mendelssohn. Because of his Jewish heritage, he left Germany, then under Nazi rule, alone by train in 1938. He continued his schooling at Gordonstoun School, and later at St John's College, Cambridge under John Edensor Littlewood and his doctoral advisor Mary Cartwright.
