RideLondon
RideLondon is an annual festival of cycling held in London. Intended as an annual legacy of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, it was first held in 2013. The format consists of a series of cycling events on closed roads around London and Essex for amateur and professional cyclists. Between 2013 and 2019, the event culminated in the London–Surrey Classic, a one-day international elite men's road cycling race. From 2022, the RideLondon Classique - a three day, international elite women's road race as part of the UCI Women's World Tour - serves as the flagship event. Current events RideLondon is composed of several events held on the same weekend, currently in late May. Previously the event was held in late July, to follow the conclusion of the Tour de France. London–Surrey Classic
The London–Surrey Classic (also known as the RideLondon–Surrey Classic) was an annual men's professional one-day road cycling race, starting and finishing in London and routed via the picturesque Surrey Hills. The first race of its kind was the London–Surrey Cycle Classic, on 14 August 2011, a 1.2 classification 140 km preparatory event for the 2012 Summer Olympics, which was won by sprinter Mark Cavendish. The men's and women's Olympic road races were held on a longer variation of the same course the following year. On 4 August 2013, the race found a permanent home as part of the Prudential RideLondon weekend, a two-day cycling festival held in London, a legacy event of the Olympics. The Prudential RideLondon–Surrey Classic was part of the UCI World Tour between 2017 and 2019. Part of the RideLondon cycling festival, the race was originally held as a one-day race in central London, and became a stage race in 2022 following the demise of the London–Surrey Classic. 2022 RideLondon Classique
The 2022 RideLondon Classique was the eighth edition of the RideLondon Classique, part of the UCI Women's World Tour. The race was part of the RideLondon cycling festival. The race took place from 27 to 29 May 2022. It was won by Dutch rider Lorena Wiebes, who also won all three stages. It was the first time that the Classique took place over multiple days, having previously been a one-day race in central London. The Classique was last held in 2019, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Compared to previous editions of the Classique, there was a reduced prize pot of €60,000 spread out over the three stages. The race was criticised for not providing live TV coverage for all three stages - with only the final stage in central London broadcast live. The London Freewheel
The London Freewheel, originally known for sponsorship reasons as the 'Hovis London Freewheel', was developed by the Mayor of London and Transport for London (TfL) to encourage and increase cycling participation, and promote cycling as a form of transport within London. The event was launched at City Hall on 26 June 2007 by the Mayor, Ken Livingstone, Konnie Huq and Tim Dewey, Marketing Director for the event's sponsor Hovis. Hovis contributed £300,000 out of the total £600,000 raised in commercial sponsorship and support. History Origins Cycling in London grew by 83% from 2000 to 2007. It was estimated that 40% of Londoners have access to a bike, but only five per cent use one regularly. Dorking
Dorking () is a market town in Surrey in South East England, about south of London. It is in Mole Valley, Mole Valley District and the non-metropolitan district, council headquarters are to the east of the centre. The High Street runs roughly east–west, parallel to the Pipp Brook and along the northern face of an outcrop of Lower Greensand Group, Lower Greensand. Cyclosportive
A cyclosportive, or often simply sportive, is a short to long distance, organised, mass-participation cycling event, typically held annually. The Italian term '' Gran Fondo'' is commonly used for these events in the United States, Australia and some other English-speaking countries. ''Cyclosportive'' is short for the French term french: label=none, randonnée cyclosportive (the spelling cyclosportif is sometimes also used but ''cyclosportive'' is correct as ''randonnée'' is a feminine noun in French). Many cyclists use sportives to challenge themselves in a personal battle against the distance and then ultimately, the clock. Some participants in a cyclosportive will ride the event like a race, with prizes awarded and considerable prestige for top place finishers, particularly in events like La Marmotte, L'Étape du Tour and the Ardechoise. The UCI Women's World Tour is the premier annual female elite road cycling tour. History In order to increase the coverage of Women's cycling the UCI held a summit in December 2014 between the UCI Women’s Working Group and the UCI Women's teams. Brompton World Championship
The Brompton World Championship is a promotional cycling event for Brompton Bicycle Ltd that has been held in various formats and venues since 2008. The event consists primarily of a criterium race in which all competitors rode Brompton folding bicycles. The race typically features a Le Mans start with the competitors running to their folded bikes and unfolding them before they could set off around the track. Riders are required to wear business attire instead of standard bicycle clothing. History The Brompton World Championship was first held in 2006 in Barcelona, Spain, before relocating to England in 2008 where the event was then held at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire. Surrey Hills AONB
The Surrey Hills is a Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), which principally covers parts of the North Downs and Greensand Ridge in Surrey, England (approximately one quarter of the land area of the county). The AONB was designated in 1958 and adjoins the Kent Downs AONB to the east and the South Downs National Park in the south west. Geography The highest summit of the Surrey Hills AONB, Leith Hill near Coldharbour, is above sea level. It is part of the Greensand Ridge, which traverses the AONB from west to east, and is the second highest point in southeast England ( Walbury Hill at 297 metres (974 ft) above sea level is the highest). The mayor of London is the chief executive of the Greater London Authority. The role was created in 2000 after the Greater London devolution referendum in 1998, and was the first directly elected mayor in the United Kingdom. St Paul's Cathedral is an Anglicanism, Anglican cathedral in London and is the seat of the Bishop of London. The cathedral serves as the mother church of the Diocese of London.
