Brompton World Championship
The Brompton World Championship is a promotional cycling event for Brompton Bicycle Ltd that has been held in various formats and venues since 2008. The event consists primarily of a criterium race in which all competitors rode Brompton folding bicycles. The race typically features a Le Mans start with the competitors running to their folded bikes and unfolding them before they could set off around the track. Riders are required to wear business attire instead of standard bicycle clothing. History The Brompton World Championship was first held in 2006 in Barcelona, Spain, before relocating to England in 2008 where the event was then held at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire. Brompton Bicycle is a British manufacturer of folding bicycles based in Greenford, London. The Brompton folding bicycle and accessories are the company's core product, noted for its self-supporting compact size when stored. All available models of the folding bicycle are based on the same hinged frame and 16-inch (35×349 mm) tyre size. A criterium, or crit, is a bike race consisting of several laps around a closed circuit, the length of each lap or circuit ranging from about 400 m to 10,000 m. Overview Race length can be determined by a number of laps or total time, in which case the number of remaining laps is calculated as the race progresses. Roberto Heras Hernández (born 1 February 1974) is a Spanish former professional road bicycle racer who won the Vuelta a España a record four times. Between 1997 Vuelta a España, 1997 and 2005 Vuelta a España, 2005 he finished in the top 5 of the Vuelta every year except 1998 Vuelta a España, 1998 when he finished 6th. He won a record-tying three times, and then broke the record with a fourth win in 2005, but he was eventually disqualified after being accused of taking erythropoietin, EPO. Michael Hutchinson (born 20 November 1973 in Northern Ireland) is a British and Irish racing cyclist and writer who has represented Great Britain, Ireland and Northern Ireland at events including the Commonwealth Games. Hutchinson's speciality is the individual time trial, but he has also won races on the track. He is a previous holder of the 10, 25, 30, 50 and 100-mile competition records.
