Roach Valley Way
The Roach Valley Way is a long-distance footpath in south-east Essex, England. The 23-mile (37 km) circular path is centred on Rochford and the River Crouch and Roach estuaries. It is waymarked, and named on Ordnance Survey mapping. The path The Roach Valley Way was devised around 1997. Its name refers to the River Roach which arises as four streams in the Rayleigh Hills. It is a circular path centred on the market town of Rochford, together with adjoining parishes and villages. The circular walk can be started at several locations and walked in either a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction. The route goes through both rural and some urban areas. These include fields, pasture, marsh and ancient woodland, along rural roads as well as through villages and some built-up areas. A significant part of the walk is along Seawall, sea walls overlooking the coastal margin of the estuaries of the River Crouch and the River Roach. Canewdon
Canewdon is a village and civil parish in the Rochford district of Essex, England. The village is located approximately northeast of the town of Rochford, while the parish extends for several miles on the southern side of the River Crouch. Canewdon is situated on one of the highest hills of the Essex coastline, from which St Nicholas's Church affords wide views of the Crouch estuary. East of the village lies the island of Wallasea, popular for sailing, and a wetland sanctuary for wildlife. The name Canewdon is derived from Old English words meaning 'the hill of Cana's people' and not, as is sometimes claimed, from King Canute, who fought and won the Battle of Ashingdon nearby in 1016 against the English King Edmund Ironside. Hockley Woods
Hockley Woods is a large woodland in south-east Essex. It is a Local Nature Reserve, and parts are a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is owned and managed by Rochford District Council. Hockley Woods are the largest residual area of the wildwood, which covered much of Essex after the Ice Age, 10,000 years ago. Hockley Woods comprise several contiguous named woods including Great Bull Wood (30.2 ha), Great Hawkwell Wood (44.1 ha), Beeches or Beaches Wood (25.0 ha), Winks Wood (1.1 ha), Little Bull Wood (1.51 ha), Whitbred's Wood (3.57 ha) and Parson's Snipe (3.67 ha). Note that none of the woods is called Hockley wood. The woods extend over parts of the parishes of Hockley, Hawkwell and Rayleigh. The size of the woods is variously given as 130 hectares, 109 hectares and 91.3 hectares, although the latter is the SSSI only. Saffron Walden
Saffron Walden is a market town and civil parish in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England, north of Bishop's Stortford, south of Cambridge and north of London. It retains a rural appearance and some buildings of the medieval period. The population was 15,504 at the 2011 census and 16,613 in the 2021 census. History Archaeological evidence suggests continuous settlement on or near the site of Saffron Walden from at least the Neolithic British Isles, Neolithic period. Southend-on-Sea
Southend-on-Sea (), commonly referred to as Southend (), is a coastal city and unitary authorities of England, unitary authority area with Borough status in the United Kingdom, borough status in south-eastern Essex, England. Saffron Trail
The Saffron Trail is a long-distance footpath in Essex, England. The 71-mile (114 km) path leads from the pier in Southend-on-Sea to St Mary's church in Saffron Walden. It is waymarked, and shown on Ordnance Survey mapping. The path The Saffron Trail was conceived by David Hitchman in 2000, as a south-east to north-west route to complement the two west-to-east long-distance paths: the Essex Way and St Peter's Way. The name recalls the cultivation of crocuses in the Saffron Walden area from which the spice saffron is obtained, and which gives the town its name. The trail starts at the pier in Southend-on-Sea (), in the south-east of the county, and goes north-west across urban and rural Essex. Hockley
Hockley is a large village and civil parish in Essex in the East of England located between Chelmsford and Southend-on-Sea, or, more specifically, between Rayleigh and Rochford. It came to prominence during the coming of the railway in the 1890s and at the 2001 census had a population of 13,616 people, reducing to 9,616 at the 2011 Census,. The parish of Hockley itself had a population of 8,909 at the (2001 census), while the urban area runs into the neighbouring parish of Hawkwell. Hockley railway station serves the village. Hawkwell
Hawkwell is a village and civil parish in the Rochford district of Essex, England. The 2011 Census gave a population for the parish of 11,730, an increase from 11,231 at the 2001 Census. History Name Over the course of history Hawkwell has been referred to by several different terms and various spellings, it appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as ''Hacuuella'' or ''Hechuuella''. It has also been called 'Hawkeswell' in the 16th century. Ashingdon is a village and civil parish in Essex, England. It is located about north of Rochford and is southeast of Chelmsford. The village lies within Rochford District and the parliamentary constituency of Rayleigh. Ashingdon has a Parish Council. It is a rural parish, one of 14 parishes in Rochford District. The Parish is approximately north of Rochford, and continues to the bank of the tidal River Crouch; the Parish includes the villages of Ashingdon and South Fambridge. Paglesham
Paglesham ( ) is a village and civil parish in the north east of the Rochford Rural District, Essex. The parish includes two hamlets of Eastend and Churchend, which are situated near the River Crouch and ''Paglesham Creek''. It is part of the ''Roach Valley Conservation Zone''. At the Eastend is The Plough and Sail Public House. There is an unmade road (Waterside Road) full of large potholes leading to a boatyard on the River Roach. There are a small number of houses and a pub, the Plough and Sail. At Churchend is St Peter's Church. There are a small number of houses and two farms. The Punch Bowl Inn, which was closed, reopened in 2024. The two hamlets form one of Essex's oldest fishing villages and the area was once renowned as a smuggling centre.
