Popes Creek, Maryland
Popes Creek is an unincorporated community in Charles County, Maryland, United States. It is located on the shore of a north–south section of the Potomac River, north of and in sight of the Harry Nice Memorial Bridge. There are docks and two seafood restaurants. U.S. Route 301 in Maryland runs north from the bridge, somewhat isolating the area between the river and the highway. To the north is Port Tobacco and to the southeast, the Cobb Island peninsula. Popes Creek is home to the Loyola Roman Catholic retreat center. Near here, John Wilkes Booth was rowed across the river, a week after he assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. John Wilkes Booth
John Wilkes Booth (May 10, 1838 – April 26, 1865) was an American stage actor who assassinated United States President Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C., on April 14, 1865. Cobb Island, Maryland
Cobb Island is a small island located at the confluence of the Potomac and Wicomico rivers in southern Charles County, Maryland, United States. It is located approximately south of Washington, and is considered to be within the Washington, D.C. MSA. Cobb Island is separated from the mainland by Neale Sound and connected to it by a fixed bridge carrying Maryland Route 254. Cobb Island is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP). As of the 2010 census, the CDP had a population of 1,166. Port Tobacco, Maryland
Port Tobacco, officially Port Tobacco Village, is a town in Charles County, in southern Maryland, United States. The population was 13 at the 2010 census, making Port Tobacco the smallest incorporated town in Maryland. Overview This was historically the territory of Algonquian-speaking peoples, especially the Potapoco and the more dominant Piscataway. Settled by the English in the 17th century and established in 1727, the town on the Port Tobacco River soon became the second largest in Maryland. The first county seat of Charles County, it was a seaport with access to the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean. It declined rapidly after river traffic was cut off by silting and the town was bypassed by the railroad.
