Ponor, Alba
Ponor (german: Gross-Poner; hu, Nagyponor) is a commune located in Alba County, Transylvania, Romania. It is composed of six villages: După Deal, Geogel (''Kisgyógypatak''), Măcărești, Ponor, Vale în Jos, and Valea Bucurului. The commune lies on the banks of the river Cheia. It is situated in the southeastern reaches of the Apuseni Mountains, within the Trascău Mountains. Ponor is located in the central-north part of Alba County, southeast of Baia de Arieș, west of Aiud, and northwest of the county seat, Alba Iulia. At the 2011 census, Ponor had a population of 540; of those, 96.3% were ethnic Romanians. A commune (''comună'' in Romanian) is the lowest level of administrative subdivision in Romania. There are 2,686 communes in Romania. The commune is the rural subdivision of a county. Urban areas, such as towns and cities within a county, are given the status of ''city'' or ''municipality''. In principle, a commune can contain any size population, but in practice, when a commune becomes relatively urbanised and exceeds approximately 10,000 residents, it is usually granted city status. Apuseni Mountains
The Apuseni Mountains ( ro, Munții Apuseni, hu, Erdélyi-középhegység) is a mountain range in Transylvania, Romania, which belongs to the Western Romanian Carpathians, also called ''Occidentali'' in Romanian. Their name translates from Romanian as Mountains "of the sunset", i.e., "western". The highest peak is the Bihor Peak at . The Apuseni Mountains have about 400 caves. Trascău Mountains
The Trascău Mountains ( ro, Munții Trascăului) are located in the Apuseni mountain range of the Western Romanian Carpathians, in Romania. The Trascău Mountains are crossed by the picturesque Arieș River valley. The highest elevation in the massif is Dâmbău Peak, at . Baia De Arieș
Baia de Arieș ( Hungarian: ''Aranyosbánya'' or ''Offenbánya''; German: ''Offenburg'') is a town in Alba County, Romania. It administers five villages: Brăzești (''Berzesd''), Cioara de Sus (''Felsőcsóra''), Muncelu (''Muncsal''), Sartăș (''Szártos'') and Simulești. With a population of 3,461 (2011), it was until 2004 a mining centre extracting, mainly for base metals but also arsenopyrite and pyrite-rich concentrate containing gold. The first writing about it is in a document of Charles I of Hungary since 1325. In the beginning of the 15th century it was declared free town. It lost town status later, but regained it in 1998. Aiud (; la, Brucla, hu, Nagyenyed, Hungarian pronunciation: ; german: Straßburg am Mieresch) is a city located in Alba County, Transylvania, Romania. The city's population is 22,876. It has the status of municipality and is the 2nd-largest city in the county, after county seat Alba Iulia. The city derives its name ultimately from Saint Giles (Aegidius), to whom the first church in the settlement was dedicated when built. Administration The municipality of Aiud is made up of the city proper and of ten villages. Victor Ciorbea
Victor Ciorbea (; born on 26 October 1954) is a Romanian jurist, politician, and civil/public servant. He was the Mayor of Bucharest between 1996 and 1997 and, after his resignation from this public dignity/position, Prime Minister of Romania from 12 December 1996 to 30 March 1998. He had also served as the Ombudsman between 2014 and 2019. Biography Born in Ponor, Alba County on 26 October 1954, Ciorbea trained as a jurist, graduating from Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca in 1979. He worked for the municipal tribunal in Bucharest, as well as lecturing in Law at the University of Bucharest.
