Port Talbot Railway 0-8-2T (Sharp Stewart)
The Sharp Stewart 0-8-2T locomotives were 0-8-2T steam tank locomotives designed and built by Sharp, Stewart and Company for the Port Talbot Railway and Docks Company, south Wales. Three were built in 1901, works nos. 4794 - 4796. They were numbered 17-19 and became Great Western Railway numbers 1358-1360. These were unusually large locomotives for their time and place. Most of the railways of South Wales relied on 0-6-2T tank locomotives. Number 1360 was withdrawn in November 1926, followed by 1359 in December 1935. Number 1358 survived to be taken over by British Railways on 1 January 1948 but was withdrawn on 29 February 1948. All three locomotives were scrapped. Sharp, Stewart And Company
Sharp, Stewart and Company was a steam locomotive manufacturer, originally based in Manchester, England. The company was established in 1843 following the dissolution of Sharp, Roberts & Co.. In 1888, it relocated to Glasgow, Scotland, where it later amalgamated with two other Glasgow-based locomotive manufacturers to form the North British Locomotive Company. Early days Iron merchant Thomas Sharp and mechanical engineer Richard Roberts first formed a partnership, Sharp, Roberts & Co. (about which, see also company section in article on Roberts), to manufacture textile machinery and machine tools. They opened the Atlas Works in Manchester in 1828. Port Talbot Railway And Docks Company
The Port Talbot Railway and Docks Company (PTR&D) was formed in 1894 to secure the means of bringing minerals, chiefly coal, to the harbour in South Wales. It took over the docks at Port Talbot that had been operated by the Port Talbot Company. It opened its main line in 1897 and reached a connection with the Great Western Railway Garw Valley line the following year. A branch line to collieries near Tonmawr also opened in 1898. The lines were extremely steeply graded and operation was difficult and expensive, but the company was successful. Passenger operation on the main line started in 1898, but this was never a principal part of the business. Port Talbot Railway 0-8-2T (Cooke)
The Cooke 0-8-2T were two 0-8-2T steam tank locomotives built in 1899 for the Port Talbot Railway and Docks Company, Port Talbot Railway (PTR), South Wales. Their PTR numbers were 20 and 21 and they became Great Western Railway (GWR) nos. 1378 and 1379 in 1922. The PTR obtained tenders from six British and three American companies and the winning tender was from the Cooke Locomotive and Machine Works of Paterson, New Jersey, United States. Cooke's London agents were Thomas W. Ford & Company of Palace Chambers, 9 Bridge Street, Westminster. The locomotives were fairly British in appearance, but had some notable characteristics of American locomotive practice, such as bar frames, and the smokebox being a separate piece from the steam chest, the latter being a "saddle" connecting to the cylinders, upon which the former was mounted on top. Port Talbot Railway 0-6-2T (Stephenson)
The Port Talbot Railway Stephenson Class were eleven 0-6-2T locomotives introduced into traffic in 1898 designed and built by Robert Stephenson and Company. They predated the somewhat similar but larger Rhymney Railway M class by six years. They were successful designs ideally suited to hauling coal trains a relatively short distance. Four of the class were nevertheless quickly sold, two to the Rhondda and Swansea Bay Railway in 1901, and two more to the Neath and Brecon Railway in 1903. This left seven to be absorbed into the Great Western Railway (GWR) in 1922. In 1925, two were rebuilt with the then newly developed number 10 standard boiler and high domed cab by the GWR. The first Locomotives of the Great Western Railway (GWR) were specified by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, but Daniel Gooch was soon appointed as the railway's Locomotive Superintendent. He designed several different broad gauge types for the growing railway, such as the Firefly and later Iron Duke Class. In 1864 Gooch was succeeded by Joseph Armstrong who brought his standard gauge experience to the workshops at Swindon. To replace some of the earlier locomotives, he put broad gauge wheels on his standard gauge locomotives and from this time on all locomotives were given numbers, including the broad gauge ones that had previously carried just names.
