Peter Pokai
Peter Alfred Charles Pokai (born 24 August 1965) is a New Zealand former professional basketball player. He played in the National Basketball League (NBL) and competed for the New Zealand Tall Blacks at the 1986 FIBA World Championship and 2000 Summer Olympics. Early life As a youth, Pokai played basketball and rugby league. He attended Upper Hutt College in Upper Hutt. NBL career Pokai debuted in the NBL in 1988 and won a championship with the Wellington Saints. He played four seasons for the Hutt Valley Lakers between 1990 and 1993. In 1991, Pokai won the NBL Most Outstanding Kiwi Forward/Centre Award and helped Hutt Valley win the NBL championship. In 1993, he helped Hutt Valley win their second title in three years after hitting the game-winning jumper in the final. Center (basketball)
The center (C), or the centre, also known as the five or the pivot, is one of the five positions in a regulation basketball game. The center is normally the tallest player on the team, and often has a great deal of strength and body mass as well. In the NBA, the center is typically close to tall. They traditionally play close to the basket in the low post. Centers are valued for their ability to protect their own goal from high-percentage close attempts on defense, while scoring and rebounding with high efficiency on offense. The 1986 FIBA World Championship was the 10th FIBA World Championship, the international basketball world championship for men's teams. It was hosted by Spain and was held from 5 to 20 July 1986. The final phase of the tournament was held at the Palacio de Deportes de la Comunidad, Madrid. They were classified as the official men's basketball event of the 1986 Goodwill Games, held simultaneously in Moscow. Basketball in New Zealand began to dwindle during the 1990s, with TV coverage reduced, sponsorships scarce, and crowd numbers on the decline.
