Peter Cunneen
Peter Cunneen (5 July 1926 – 24 November 2007) was an Australian speedway driver who competed during the 1950s and 1960s. He won the Australian Speedcar Championship in 1965. Career Peter Cunneen raced during a golden age for speedway at the Sydney Showground – a time when crowds regularly exceeded 30,000 people – and competed in an incredible 247 feature races at the famous arena, more than any other driver in history. Known for his skilful driving and consistency, Cunneen amassed 18 wins, 23 seconds and 29 thirds at the Showground during his career. Cunneen began his speedway career in the mid-1950s and quickly established himself as one of the country's elite drivers. In 1957, he took 4th place in the NSW Championship, 7th in the Australian Championship and 2nd place in the World Derby. Australian Speedcar Championship
The Australian Speedcar Championship is a dirt track motor racing championship held in Australia each year to determine the Australian national champion in midget car racing. The single championship meeting, run over two nights in either late January or early February, has been held each year since first being run at the Tracey's Speedway in Melbourne in 1935. Over the years there have been at times more than one Australian Championship meeting held in Australia (and sometimes in the same city) due to being sanctioned by different governing bodies. There were also times during the 1950s and 1960s when several track promoters around the country staged meetings which they claimed were either an Australian Championship, or sometimes even a World Championship, usually in defiance of not being awarded the right to host the official championship. Sydney Showground Speedway
Sydney Showground Speedway, originally known as the Speedway Royal and later the Speedway Royale but often referred to as just The Royale or The Showground, was a dirt Dirt track racing venue at the old Sydney Showground used from 1926 until 1996. History In 1937, The Showground was claimed to be the fastest speedway in the world by the tracks promoters. The egg shaped track was also the site of some spectacular crashes, some unfortunate deaths and a lot of spectacular racing. Although solos were first to race at the showground on 21 July 1926, they were soon joined by sidecars and Speedcars (also known as Midgets but called Speedcars in Australia). Leroy Warriner
Leroy Warriner (March 1, 1919 – January 2, 2003) was an American racing driver from Indianapolis who attempted to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 every year from 1951 to 1958 without succeeding. Warriner only managed to qualify for a single Championship Car race, the September 1953 race at the Indiana State Fairgrounds where he started and finished 18th.
