Ostholstein
Ostholstein (; ) is a district in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is bounded by (from the southwest and clockwise) the districts of Stormarn, Segeberg and Plön, the Baltic Sea and the city of Lübeck. Geographically, the district covers the vast majority of what is considered to be the peninsular of Wagria. Geography The district consists of the Wagria peninsula between the Bay of Lübeck and the Bay of Kiel, the island of Fehmarn, the eastern part of the region called Holstein Switzerland and the northern suburbs of Lübeck. Holsatian Switzerland is an area full of lakes and woody hills, which is shared with the adjoining district of Plön. The Bungsberg, though only 168 m in height, is the highest elevation in Schleswig-Holstein. The island of Fehmarn is the third largest island of Germany. Ahrensbök
Ahrensbök (Holsatian: ''Ahrensböök'') is a municipality in the district of Ostholstein, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is situated approximately 17 km northwest of Lübeck, and 45 km southeast of Kiel. History Ahrensbök came into existence after the foundation here of a pilgrimage chapel in 1280. The first documentary reference to the settlement dates from 1328. In 1348, the place was devastated by the Black Death. In 1397, the Carthusians founded a monastery here, Ahrensbök Charterhouse, which helped the place grow in prominence. Bad Schwartau
Bad Schwartau is the largest city in the district of Ostholstein, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is situated on the river Trave and the Schwartau creek, approx. 5 km north of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck. Bad Schwartau is a spa-city, well known for its iodide saline waters. Neustadt in Holstein (; Holsatian: ''Niestadt in Holsteen'') is a town in the district of Ostholstein, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, on the Bay of Lübeck 30 km northeast of Lübeck, and 50 km southeast of Kiel. History In World War II, subcamp Number 1049 Neustadt in Holstein/Schleswig-Holstein was part of the Neuengamme concentration camp. In the closing hours of the Second World War, several ships, including SS ''Cap Arcona'', were sunk in the bay to the South of Neustadt. Grömitz
Grömitz () is a municipality in the district of Ostholstein, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is situated on the Bay of Lübeck, approximately 35 km northeast of Lübeck, and 23 km east of Eutin. Grömitz is a settlement on the Baltic Sea. In fair weather one can see buildings on the about 15 kilometer distant shore. The town name contains the Slavic root ''grom'' ("thunder") and means "a place of thunder". The sei whale was described after a whale stranded near Grömitz in 1829. Heiligenhafen
Heiligenhafen (; Holsatian: ''Hilligenhaven'') is a town in the district of Ostholstein, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is situated on the Baltic Sea coast, opposite the island Fehmarn, approx. 60 km northeast of Lübeck, and 55 km east of Kiel. Geography The town centre is located on a small bight, the ''binnensee'' (inland lake) from which the west of the town has been separated. Two headlands are located off the coast: ''Steinwarder'' and ''Graswarder'', the latter one is a bird sanctuary. Economy A little fishing port and a marina with about 1000 moorings is located at the open part of the bight close to the town centre. Tourism is an important part of the economy of the town.
