Octopus Maorum
''Macroctopus maorum'' is known more commonly as the Maori octopus or the New Zealand octopus (''wheke'' in Maori). They can also be known as ''Pinnoctopus cordiformis'', is found in the waters around New Zealand and southern Australia. ''M. maorum'' is one of the largest and most aggressive octopus species living in the New Zealand and Australian waters. They feed mainly on crustaceans and fish. Although they have a short life span, the females lay thousands of eggs and are very protective of them. Identification ''Macroctopus maorum'' is a large octopus and it is regularly described as a ‘robust’ species, it is a member of the ''Octopus macropus'' species complex. Guy Coburn Robson (1888–1945) was a British zoologist, specializing in Mollusca, who first named and described ''Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni'', the colossal squid. Frederick Hutton (scientist)
Captain Frederick Wollaston Hutton (16 November 1836 – 27 October 1905) was an English-New Zealand scientist who applied the theory of natural selection to explain the origins and nature of the natural history of New Zealand. An army officer in early life, he then had an academic career in geology and biology. He became one of the most able and prolific nineteenth century naturalists of New Zealand. Biography Hutton was born in Gate Burton, Lincolnshire, England, the son of the Rev. Henry Frederick Hutton and his wife Louisa Wollaston, daughter of the Rev. Henry John Wollaston. Bernard Charles Cotton (2 February 1905 – 3 May 1966) was an Australian malacology, malacologist and museum curator of United Kingdom, British origin. Life Cotton was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, where he was educated at Abbeyfield House. He immigrated, with his parents, to South Australia in 1923. Within a few months of his arrival he joined the staff of the South Australian Museum in Adelaide as a cadet to assist the museum's honorary Conchology, conchologist, Sir Joseph Verco. In 1928 he was appointed Assistant Conchologist and in 1934 became Curator of Molluscs. He retired from the museum in 1962 because of ill health. He died in 1966.
