Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory
The Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory (NTTL) is a program operated by the University of Nebraska in accordance with Nebraska law to test the performance of agricultural equipment that is to be sold in the United States for compliance with OECD standards. The NTTL has operated since 1920 as the common standard reference for tractor performance in the United States. History Impetus for the Nebraska Tractor Test Act of 1919, or Nebraska Tractor Law, came from a Nebraska farmer, Wilmot F. Crozier, who had been disappointed with the performance of several tractors he had bought. One had been marketed as a Ford tractor, but the Ford Tractor Company of the time was completely unrelated to the Ford Motor Company, and its products were of poor quality. The new law was enacted to address problems of false advertising of tractor features and capabilities, requiring that all agricultural tractors sold in Nebraska must have their performance verified by three engineers. Ford Tractor Company was a Minneapolis-based company active from 1916 to 1917, that built tractors to facilitate "horseless farming". History Ford Tractor Company was incorporated on March 15, 1915, by W. Baer Ewing and Paul W. Ford. Prior to founding the company, Ewing worked in the insurance business. The choice of name has been assessed as deceptive by later commentators. Businessman W. Baer Ewing had hired tractor designer Robert Kinkaid to develop his product line, but named the company after one Paul Ford, a local hardware clerk Ewing had hired, allegedly to leverage the Ford name to take advantage of customer confusion with Henry Ford. Waterloo Boy
The Waterloo Gasoline Engine Company was the first company to manufacture and sell gasoline powered farm tractors. Based in Waterloo, Iowa, the company was created by John Froelich and a group of Iowa businessmen in 1893, and was originally named the Waterloo Gasoline Traction Engine Company. In 1892, Froelich built a successful gasoline-powered tractor, and the new company was given the opportunity to manufacture and sell the tractor Froelich designed. The tractor was not successful commercially, and of the four tractors built by the company only two were purchased, and these were later returned to the company by unsatisfied customers.
