Municipalities Of Bangladesh
This article presents a list of cities and towns in Bangladesh. According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics and the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives of Bangladesh, there are 532 urban centres in Bangladesh. The bureau defines an urban centre with a population of 100,000 or more as a "city". Altogether, there are 42 such cities in Bangladesh. 11 of these cities can be considered major cities as these are governed by City Corporations. All of the City Corporation-governed cities currently have a population of more than 200,000 (which is not a criterion for the status). Besides the 11 major cities, there are 31 other cities in Bangladesh that are not governed by "City Corporations", rather by "Municipal Corporations". A city with a population of more than 10,000,000 is defined by the bureau as a megacity. Dhaka is the only megacity in Bangladesh according to this definition. The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) is the centralized official bureau in Bangladesh for collecting statistics on demographics, the economy, and other facts about the country and disseminating the information. History Although independent statistical programs had existed in the country before, they were often incomplete or produced inaccurate results, which led the Government of Bangladesh establishing an official bureau in August 1974, by merging four of the previous larger statistical agencies, the Bureau of Statistics, the Bureau of Agriculture Statistics, the Agriculture Census Commission and the Population Census Commission. In July 1975, the Statistics and Informatics Division was created under the Planning Ministry (Bangladesh) and tasked to oversee the BBS. It was formed comprising Narayanganj Town, Siddhirganj Municipal area and Kadamrasul Municipality. Cumilla City Corporation is a self-governed municipal administration in Bangladesh that administers and oversees development and maintenance works in the city of Cumilla. The corporation covers an area of over 53.84 square kilometers in the Cumilla District. The body was known as Cumilla Municipality previously, until it obtained the City Corporation status by a ministry of local government declaration on 10 July 2011. Mymensingh City Corporation is the municipal government of the city of Mymensingh, Bangladesh. The city is located about north of Dhaka, the capital of the country. Mymensingh Municipality was upgraded to a city corporation, the country's 12th, on 2 April 2018 at a meeting of the National Implementation Committee on Administrative Reforms (NICAR), after satisfying all eight criteria for forming a city corporation. Barisal City Corporation is a self-governed municipal administration in Bangladesh that administers and oversees development and maintenance works in the city of Barisal. The corporation covers an area of over 58 square kilometers in the Barisal district where over five million people live as permanent residents. The body was known as Barisal Municipality previously, until it obtained the City Corporation status by a ministry of local government declaration on 25 July 2002. Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) is a self-governing agency that governs the municipal areas of Chattogram and some adjoining areas of south-eastern Bangladesh.
