Montello is a city in and the county seat of Marquette County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,495 at the 2010 census. The Fox River flows through the city. Montello is home to the largest tree in Wisconsin. A notable attraction in the city is the former granite quarry, which has been transformed into a park with several waterfalls. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which, is land and is water. The Fox River flows from east through the middle of Montello. There is a dam in Montello, and the upstream portion of the river to the west of the dam is called Buffalo Lake. The Montello River flows from the North meeting the Fox at the south end of Montello. Montello Commercial Historic District
The Montello Commercial Historic District is located in Montello, Wisconsin. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. History The land that the district now sits on was once home to the Ho-Chunk and the Menominee. Among the businesses that sprung up in the district was what became the Montello Granite Company. Granite from Montello would be used to construct several monuments and memorials to the soldiers of the American Civil War. It was also used to build the tombs of U.S. President Ulysses S. State Trunk Highway 22 (often called Highway 22, STH-22 or WIS 22) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The route's trajectory is mostly south to north, with the exception of the segment between Shawano and the northern terminus being east–west. It is generally a two-lane surface road providing a connecting route between Waupaca, Shawano, Gillett and Oconto. Various urban sections have multilane segments. Route description WIS 22's southern terminus is in Columbia County at the junction of US 51 and WIS 60 in North Leeds, two miles (3 km) east of Arlington. The Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), also referred to simply as the Wisconsin Synod, is an American Confessional Lutheran denomination of Christianity. Characterized as theologically conservative, it was founded in 1850 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
