Mona Lohanda
Mona Lohanda (4 November 1947 – 16 January 2021) was an Indonesian historian, archivist and academic, as well as a curator of the National Archives of Indonesia. She was a leading authority on the history of Batavia, as well as its Chinese-Indonesian community. Early life On 4 November 1947, Lohanda was born in Tangerang, Indonesia. Lohanda comes from a Benteng Chinese family. Lohanda grew up in Tangerang, Indonesia. Education In 1975, Lohanda graduated with a B.A. degree from the Faculty of Literature, University of Indonesia. Lohanda was encouraged by the Indonesian historian Harsja Bachtiar to focus on Chinese-Indonesian history. In 1994, Lohanda earned a M.A. from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Dutch East India Company
The United East India Company ( nl, Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie, the VOC) was a chartered company established on the 20th March 1602 by the States General of the Netherlands amalgamating existing companies into the first joint-stock company in the world, granting it a 21-year monopoly to carry out trade activities in Asia. Shares in the company could be bought by any resident of the United Provinces and then subsequently bought and sold in open-air secondary markets (one of which became the Amsterdam Stock Exchange). It is sometimes considered to have been the first multinational corporation. Chinese Indonesian Culture
Chinese Indonesians ( id, Orang Tionghoa Indonesia) and colloquially Chindo or just Tionghoa are Indonesians whose ancestors arrived from China at some stage in the last eight centuries. Chinese people and their Indonesian descendants have lived in the Indonesian archipelago since at least the 13th century. Many came initially as sojourners (temporary residents), intending to return home in their old age. Some, however, stayed in the region as economic migrants. Their population grew rapidly during the colonial period when workers were contracted from their home provinces in Southern China. Discrimination against Chinese Indonesians has occurred since the start of Dutch colonialism in the region, although government policies implemented since 1998 have attempted to redress this. The National Archives of Indonesia ( id, Arsip Nasional Republik Indonesia, ANRI) is the non-departmental government institution of Indonesia responsible for maintaining a central archive. It holds the largest archive collection related to the Dutch East India Company (VOC).
