Marshland is an unincorporated community located in the town of Buffalo, in Buffalo County, Wisconsin, United States. Marshland is located on Wisconsin Highway 35 and Wisconsin Highway 54 east-southeast of Fountain City. History The La Crosse, Trempealeau & Prescott Railroad chartered to build from a point across the river from Winona to connect with the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul railroad at Winona Junction in Wisconsin near La Crosse. This was completed in 1870 with tracks in Marshland. The Green Bay & Minnesota Railroad laid tracks from Merrillian Junction to join with the La Crosse, Trempealeau, & Prescott Railroad at Marshland in 1873. That railroad was built to reach Winona, Minnesota and the Winona and St. Peter Railroad. Green Bay And Western Railroad
The Green Bay and Western Railroad served central Wisconsin for almost 100 years before it was absorbed into the Wisconsin Central in 1993. For much of its history the railroad was also known as the Green Bay Route. At the end of 1970 it operated 255 miles of road on 322 miles of track; that year it reported 317 million ton-miles of revenue freight. History The Green Bay and Western Railroad was formed in 1896 from the bankruptcy proceedings of the Green Bay, Winona & St Paul and the Kewaunee, Green Bay and Western. Medary (also Winona Junction) is an unincorporated community located in the town of Medary, La Crosse County, Wisconsin, United States. The Great River State Trail has its trailhead located here. History The La Crosse, Trempealeau & Prescott Railroad chartered to build from a point across the river from Winona, Minnesota to connect with the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul railroad. This rail junction originally was called Trempealeau Junction, but later became Winona Junction. The railroad was consolidated with the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad June 6, 1877. The area was renamed in honor of Samuel Medary, an American politician. A community post office operated under the name Medary in 1895 until 1900. Fountain City is a small city bordering the Mississippi River in Buffalo County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 859 at the 2010 census. History Fountain City was originally called Holmes' Landing, after Thomas Holmes, who settled there in 1839. Boats would stop at the landing to take on firewood, as well as water from springs not far from the river, leading to the name of Fountain City. Geography Fountain City is located at (44.124506, -91.709470), at the intersection of highways 35 and 95. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which, are land and are covered by water. State Trunk Highway 54 (often called Highway 54, STH-54 or WIS 54) is a Wisconsin state highway running east–west across central Wisconsin. It is in length. Route description Minnesota state line to Plover WIS 54 begins at the western terminus. It crosses through the Minnesota state line at Winona, Minnesota via the North Channel Bridge. At this bridge, MN 43 ends there. After crossing the bridge, it soon turns east via WIS 35/Great River Road. In Centerville, WIS 35, as well as the Great River Road, turn southward; leaves the concurrency. At the same junction, WIS 93 joins the concurrency eastward. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. It is a type of gazetteer.
