Luciobarbus Graellsii
''Luciobarbus graellsii'' is a ray-finned fish species in the family Cyprinidae. It is here placed in '' Luciobarbus'' following the IUCN, but that genus is very closely related to the other typical barbels and perhaps better considered a mere subgenus of ''Barbus''. The Andalusian barbel was formerly included in '' L. bocagei'' as subspecies.de Graaf ''et al.'' (2007), Almodóvar ''et al.'' (2008), Freyhof & Kottelat (2008) In addition, ''L. graellsii'' has – like its close relative the "Albanian barbel" ('' Luciobarbus albanicus'') and the slightly more distantly related red-tailed barbel ('' Barbus haasi'') – also been placed in ''Messinobarbus''. But even if that genus is valid, it is probably incorrect to do so.Freyhof & Kottelat (2008) It was originally endemic to the northeast of Spain, occurring chiefly on the Mediterranean side in the Ebro's to Ter River' drainage basins, but also on the Atlantic side to the Asón drainage basin. Around 1998, it was introdu ...

Barbus Carottae
''Barbus carottae'' is a species of ray-finned fish in the genus ''Barbus'' from Lake Yliki in Greece. Etymology Named for Arianna Carotta who collected the specimens used for the species description A species description is a formal scientific description of a newly encountered species, typically articulated through a scientific publication. Its purpose is to provide a clear description of a new species of organism and explain how it diff ..., along with the author. Description Generally very similar to other lake populations of barbels. Body colour uniformly silver in adults and speckled by brownish, irregular spots in juveniles. Dorsal fin, 7-8 soft rays, spiny and serrated last unbranched dorsal-fin ray. Median lobe of the posterior lip moderately compressed. The distinguishing feature is the large scales. The SL of the holotype was and when compared to similar sized syntypes, the number of scales along the lateral line was reduced to 39-43, from 50-57. There were a ...

Luciobarbus Albanicus
The Albanian barbel (''Luciobarbus albanicus'') is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish in the family Cyprinidae, which includes the carps and barbs. This species is found in the Western Balkans. Taxonomy The Albanian barbel was first formally described in 1870 as ''Barbus albanicus'' by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner with its type locality given as Lake Scutari in Albania, although it was actually Lake Ioannina in Greece. The Albanian barbel belongs to the genus '' Luciobarbus'', commonly referred to as barbs, which belongs to the subfamily Barbinae of the family Cyprinidae. Etymology The Albanian barbel belongs to the genus ''Luciobarbus'', this name combines ''lucius'', the Latin for pike, with the genus name ''Barbus'', an allusion to the pike-like snout of the type species of the genus, '' Luciobarbus esocinus''. The specific name, ''albanicus'', means of Albania where the stated type locality, Lake Scutari, is located. Distribution and ecology The ...

Luciobarbus Comizo
The Iberian barbel (''Luciobarbus comizo'') is a ray-finned fish species in the family Cyprinidae. It is here placed in '' Luciobarbus'' following the IUCN, but that genus is very closely related to the other typical barbels and perhaps better considered a mere subgenus of ''Barbus''. This large barbel can grow to over long. Natural hybrids of this barbel and the closely related '' L. bocagei'' are not uncommon in the middle Tagus river. The two species and their hybrids are hard to distinguish, but ''L. comizo'' usually has a longer and more narrow snout, and the last unbranched ray of the dorsal fin has a longer denticulated section but with more widely spaced denticles. In the first two traits the hybrids are intermediate between their parent species, in the latter they are closer to the Iberian Barbel. Also, the two species are distinguished by their microhabitat preferences where they are sympatric, with ''L. bocagei'' inhabiting somewhat faster-moving parts of the river. ...

Barbus Haasi
''Barbus haasi'', or the Catalonian barbel or redtail barb ; or ''barbo de cola roja''), is a species of freshwater fish in the family Cyprinidae. It is a small size barbel found only in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula. Morphologically it is similar to '' Barbus bocagei'', but it is smaller and rarely reaches sizes longer than Its natural habitats are rivers and inland karsts in all the basin, but mainly in inner Catalonia, especially in the Bages comarca area. The species is threatened by habitat loss and the introduction of non-native species such as the pumpkinseed ('' Lepomis gibbosus'') and the Wels catfish (''Silurus glanis The wels catfish ( or ; ''Silurus glanis''), also called sheatfish or just wels, is a large species of catfish native to wide areas of central, southern, and eastern Europe, in the basins of the Baltic Sea, Baltic, Black Sea, Black and Caspian ...''). Barbus Bocagei
''Luciobarbus bocagei'' is a ray-finned fish species in the family Cyprinidae. Its scientific name honours the Portuguese zoologist and politician Jose Vicente Barboza du Bocage. It is here placed in '' Luciobarbus'' following the IUCN, but that genus is very closely related to the other typical barbels and perhaps better considered a mere subgenus of ''Barbus''. The Ebro barbel (''L. graellsii'') and Andalusian barbel (''L. sclateri'') were formerly included in ''L. bocagei'' as subspecies. Natural hybrids of this barbel and the closely related Iberian Barbel (''L. comizo'', a threatened species) are not uncommon in the middle Tagus river. The two species and their hybrids are hard to distinguish, but ''L. bocagei'' has a shorter and wider head, and the last unbranched ray of the dorsal fin has a shorter denticulated section but with more densely packed denticles. In the first two traits the hybrids are intermediate between their parent species, in the latter they are close ...

Barbinae
Barbinae are a subfamily of fish included in the family Cyprinidae. The taxonomy for this group has not been entirely worked out as some genera historically considered within it are still considered ''incertae sedis'' with respect to being a member of the family, and may be included here, while others may be moved to other subfamilies. The earliest fossil remains of this subfamily are known from the early-mid Eocene Sangkarewang Formation of Sumatra, Indonesia, with articulated specimens of several extinct genera known. Genera Barbinae contains the following extant genera: * '' Aulopyge'' Heckel, 1841 * ''Barbus'' Daudin, 1805 * '' Caecocypris'' Banister & Bunni, 1980 * ''Capoeta'' Valenciennes, 1842 * '' Cyprinion'' Heckel, 1843 * '' Kantaka'' Hora, 1942 * '' Luciobarbus'' Heckel, 1843 * '' Paracapoeta'' Turan Turan (; ; , , ) is a historical region in Central Asia. Cyprinidae
Cyprinidae is a family of freshwater fish commonly called the carp or minnow family, including the carps, the true minnows, and their relatives the barbs and barbels, among others. Cyprinidae is the largest and most diverse fish family, and the largest vertebrate animal family overall, with about 1,780 species divided into 166 valid genera. Cyprinids range from about in size to the giant barb (''Catlocarpio siamensis''). By genus and species count, the family makes up more than two-thirds of the ostariophysian order Cypriniformes. The family name is derived from the Greek word ( 'carp'). Biology and ecology Cyprinids are stomachless, or ''agastric'', fish with toothless jaws. Even so, food can be effectively chewed by the gill rakers of the specialized last gill bow. These pharyngeal teeth allow the fish to make chewing motions against a chewing plate formed by a bony process of the skull. The pharyngeal teeth are unique to each species and are used to identify spec ...

Luciobarbus Guiraonis
''Luciobarbus guiraonis'' is a ray-finned fish species in the family Cyprinidae. It is here placed in '' Luciobarbus'' following the IUCN, but that genus is very closely related to the other typical barbels and perhaps better considered a mere subgenus of ''Barbus''.de Graaf ''et al.'' (2007), Almodóvar ''et al.'' (2008) This large barbel is endemic to Spain, where it is known as ''barbo mediterraneo''. This literally means "Mediterranean Barbel" in English, but that common name is usually applied to the closely related '' Barbus meridionalis'', of whose scientific name it is an equivalent. It occurs in rivers, lakes and reservoirs on the Mediterranean side of Spain, from the Mijares's to the Serpis River' drainage basins, and in the drainage basin of the upper Guadiana River. It is classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN and its numbers will probably decrease by about one-third until 2020. It is endemic to the Iberian Peninsula, where it occurs in the middle and lower Guadiana River's drainage basin in both Portugal and Spain. A presumably introduced population is found in a small stretch of the Tagus. Its natural habitats are deep and slow rivers and reservoirs. Its numbers are declining across its rather small range, and it is classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN Red List. By 2020 its stocks will probably number less than half of what they were at the turn of the millennium. The main cause of its decline is unsustainable use of water resources, such as water pollution, extraction f ...
