Maria (South African Singer)
Carmélia Maria Neto Lopes Maria (March 4, 1945 − May 10, 1980), more commonly known as Maria, was a South African musician. Maria was born in Lourenço Marques (now known as Maputo) in Mozambique, then a prosperous Portuguese colony in South-Eastern Africa, on March 4, 1945. Her mother, who was of Portuguese origin, was a performer at RCM, . At the age of two, her family moved to Johannesburg, South Africa . Maria began to show interest in music and led private and school parties. In 1964, she started performing professionally in night clubs in Johannesburg, which, at the time, was known as the New York of Africa. She rose to fame after then guitarist Archie Van Der Ploeg suggested her to Stevie van Kerken, lead singer of "The New Trends", for a role in the chorus of a Dickie Loader song, "Help me Forget". Springbok Radio (spelled ''Springbokradio'' in Afrikaans, ) was a South African nationwide radio station that operated from 1950 to 1985. History SABC's decision in December 1945 to develop a commercial service was constrained by post-war financial issues. After almost five years of investigation and after consulting John Reith, 1st Baron Reith, Lord Reith of the BBC and the South African government, it decided to introduce commercial radio to supplement the SABC's public service English and Afrikaans networks and help solve the SABC's financial problems. Peter Koelewijn (born 29 December 1940) is a founding father of Dutch-language rock and roll. Koelewijn is also a successful producer and songwriter for other Dutch artists. His most famous song is "Kom van dat dak af". Biography Peter Koelewijn was born on 29 December 1940, the son of a fishmonger in the southern Dutch city of Eindhoven. At the age of thirteen, he received his first guitar. In 1957, he started writing his first songs in English. He started his first band at secondary school with guitarists Karel Jansen and Roelof Egmond and singer Anneke Grönloh. Later on, Harry van Hoof (who later became a famous conductor), and drummer Peter van der Voort, joined the band. Around the same time, Grönloh left the band.
