Marriage Bar
A marriage bar is the practice of restricting the employment of married women. Common in English-speaking countries from the late 19th century to the 1970s, the practice often called for the termination of the employment of a woman on her marriage, especially in teaching and clerical occupations. Further, widowed women with children were still considered to be married at times, preventing them from being hired, as well. The practice lacked an economic justification, and its rigid application was often disruptive to workplaces. However, marriage bars were widely relaxed in wartime due to an increase in the demand for labor. Anne Agius Ferrante
Anne Agius Ferrante (20 August 1925 – 5 April 2023) was a Maltese politician who served in the Parliament of Malta from 1980 until 1981 as a member of the Nationalist Party. Biography Ferrante was born in Mdina on 20 August 1925, the daughter of Sir Philip Pullicino, who served as attorney general of Malta. Between 1957 and 1960, she served as the Commissioner of the Island of Malta for the Girl Guides Association. In 1980, following the death of George Borg Olivier, Ferrante was elected to the House of Representatives via by-election, making her the first female Nationalist Party member to be nationally elected. She continued to hold her seat until the next election was held in 1981. Ferrante lost her husband at an early age, but devoted herself to raising her children Susan Zammit Tabona and Timothy. Evelyn Bonaci
Evelyn Bonaci (29 November 1916 – 16 December 2008) was a Maltese politician who served in the Parliament of Malta from 1966 until 1976 as a member of the Labour Party. Bonaci co-founded the women's wing of the Labour Party. Biography Evelyn Bonaci was born on 29 November 1916 in Sliema, Malta. Several members of her family were politicians associated with the Malta Labour Party: her husband Louis unsuccessfully ran for the Parliament of Malta in the 1953 and 1955 elections, while her brother-in-law, Cikku Bonaci, was an MP and government minister. In 1961, she co-founded the women's wing of the Labour Party along with Agatha Barbara. Bonaci later served as the president of the women's wing of the party branch in Birkirkara, and was a member of the Labour Party's national executive committee. Agatha Barbara
Agatha Barbara, (11 March 1923 – 4 February 2002) was a Maltese politician, having served as a Labour Member of Parliament and Minister. She was the first woman to serve as president of Malta, and remains the longest-serving woman Member of Parliament in Maltese political history. Early life Barbara was born in Żabbar, Malta, in 1923. Her father worked as a tug master (a skilled pilot of tugboats) for the Royal Navy, and was very poorly paid. Her mother struggled to feed the nine children on her husband's wages. Agatha was the second child and the eldest daughter. She pleaded her parents to send her to school and attended grammar school in Valletta, but World War II prevented her from continuing to college. Mabel Strickland
Mabel Edeline Strickland, (8 January 1899 – 29 November 1988), was an Anglo-Maltese journalist, newspaper proprietor and politician. Family and personal life Strickland was the daughter of Sir Gerald Strickland, later the 4th Prime Minister of Malta, and Lady Edeline Sackville. Her mother was the eldest daughter of Reginald Sackville, 7th Earl De La Warr of Knole, Kent. Mabel never married, leaving the bulk of her estate to her sole heir Robert Hornyold-Strickland. Mabel set up the Strickland Foundation "for herself and her heirs in perpetuity" in 1979. However some of her key assets including the majority shareholding of Allied Newspapers Ltd together with her family home and all of her personal, legal and administrative papers were diverted by her executors away from Mabel's heir.
